California lawmakers have passed one of the nation’s most extreme bills protecting abortionists and abusers who mail Chemical Abortion Pills to states with abortion laws, as well as disregarding the victims who receive, or feel pressured, to take them. With strong support in both the State Assembly and Senate, California Assembly Bill 260 is poised for Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature, as per the New York Times.
Under the new law, health care providers in California will be permitted to mail Chemical Abortion Pills with little to no identifying information. Labels and accompanying paperwork can exclude the names of patients, prescribers, and pharmacists—reducing the risk of out-of-state legal repercussions from states that protect Life. This empowers California to violate the sovereignty of any state in the Union.
Given that most Chemical Abortion Pills in the U.S. are dispensed and shipped from California-based pharmacies, this legislation is expected have far-reaching ramifications. By reinforcing protections and streamlining access, California continues to set a national precedent for endangering the lives of the preborn and endangering the delicate fabric of our Union.

Sponsors: Democratic Assemblywoman Cecelia Aguiar-Curry of California’s 4th state assembly introduced this bill at the beginning of 2025.
Why it matters: AB 260 repeals past laws that required parental consent for abortion or criminalized assisting in or advertising abortion. These provisions had been previously ruled unconstitutional in California and are now formally removed.

What we are saying: “Where are all the ‘feminists’ that are supposed to protect women from abusive men?” said Student for Life’s Kristan Hawkins in reaction to this bill. “There is no reason for them not to be standing shoulder to shoulder with the Pro-Life Generation. These shield laws are propping up an abusive culture that erodes consent, promotes misogyny, and lets men determine the conditions of motherhood. This California law empowers abusers, abortionists, and criminals.”
The road ahead: Governor Newsom will use this legislation to chest beat on being the loudest and boldest on abortion, which he hopes will help him in the future Democratic Presidential Primary. However, it puts him and his home state out of step with the rest of America.
What’s new or unique or different: This bill is nakedly reckless in erasing any trace of responsibility and accountability, endangering the lives of the preborn and women.
What we’re watching: This sets up a showdown between states that are defending Life, and those working to end it. It can lead to a Constitutional crisis and a showdown. The case between New York and Texas is sure to reach the Supreme Court.
Where it goes next (if we know): Expected to be signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, who is seemingly desperate to be the Democratic nominee for President in 2028.
Zoom out: California is passing one of the most extreme laws on this issue in the Nation, signaling for progressive states to follow. This will endanger the preborn, women, and state sovereignty. Relationships between states will change if the Supreme Court does not stop them. This law being tied to Gov. Newsom may find itself at the center of the 2028 Presidential election.
