Echoing the calls of Students for Life Action (SFLAction), 43 members of the Texas House of Representatives sent a letter to House State Affairs Committee Chairman Representative Ken King, urging him to bring S.B. 2880, the Women and Child Protection Act, to a vote—and their push succeeded.
On Friday, May 23rd, the bill was brought forward and passed out of committee in an 8 to 5 vote, marking a major victory for pro-life advocates across Texas. It’s now headed to the House floor for a vote.
This bill would prohibit Online, No Test Chemical Abortion Pill traffickers—often from out-of-state—from distributing these dangerous pills illegally in Texas.
The battle isn’t over, however, as Texas Legislative Session ends Monday, June 2nd, which means Texas legislators have less than two weeks left to step up and protect women and preborn children from Chemical Abortion Pill trafficking.
Saturday, May 24th would have been the final day for House committees to take action on Senate bills. This prompted the 43 Members to send the following urgent letter to Rep. King.
“Texas is in crisis,” the letter warns. “The tremendous protections afforded to mothers and children by S.B. 8, the Heartbeat Bill, and H.B. 1290, the Trigger Bill, is subverted daily by bad actors who flood our state with dangerous and deadly abortion pills. This must end. Senator Hughes’ legislation is the next step forward to protect the lives of the unborn and the well-being of Texas women and babies.”
Both the Heartbeat Bill and the Trigger Bill passed in 2021, marking a pivotal shift in pro-life legislation in Texas by prohibiting abortion and laying the groundwork for a post-Roe v. Wade legal framework.
Last week, students visited the Texas State Capitol to meet with lawmakers, asking them to support S.B. 2880 and telling them about the harms of these dangerous Chemical Abortion Pills.
In addition to students visiting the Capitol, SFLAction’s Kristi Hamrick testified in favor of the companion bill in the Texas House State Affairs Committee, H.B. 5510 last month.
“Chemical Abortion Pills expose women to injury, infertility, and death,” she cautioned lawmakers. “The reckless model empowers abusers, who can give the deadly pills without women’s knowledge or consent.”
Now it’s time for the Texas House of Representatives to protect the lives of women and preborn children by taking action and passing S.B. 2880.
