Joe Biden, knowing that his standing with Catholic voters is shaky at best (given his denouncement by a Cardinal and multiple Catholic priests), recently penned an op ed at the Christian Post trying to make one last plea to this segment of Christians. Unfortunately, it’s worked on some people…
But let’s get serious. There is absolutely no gray area in the Catholic Church’s stance on abortion. It’s in doctrinal writing, it’s come out of multiple pope’s mouths, and it’s in the Bible. Catholics are opposed to abortion because all human beings have inherent value and dignity, beginning at conception. In his op ed, Biden makes the argument for a bunch of other stuff that he thinks “proves” his rigid Catholicism – mask-wearing, being pro-immigration, fighting racism, etc.
Practicing American Catholics aren’t buying it. It’s true that voting is confusing for Catholics; all “labels” aside, it would seem on the surface that neither party is a fully suitable choice. Unpacking that, of course, would be another article entirely. But the fact remains: no honest Catholic can vote for a candidate promising to expand abortion and take hits at religious freedom.
The following is straight from the Biden-Harris campaign website:
Translation? Force a bad national abortion mandate on America, removing state’s rights to regulate their own abortion limits. Give MORE money to Planned Parenthood (they already get $600 million of our tax dollars each year), with which they will do more abortions. Reinstate the international funding of abortion – because just doing it at home isn’t bad enough. And force people with moral objections to fund contraception, much of which is abortifacient. He opposed the Supreme Court ruling exempting the Little Sisters of the Poor from paying for birth control.
The mental gymnastics it requires to justify a Catholic vote for these abortion promises are enough to make anyone’s head spin.
