Let It Fly High: Alaskan Governor Displays Pro-Life Flag at Residence for Roe’s Anniversary

The now-debunked Roe v. Wade decision saw its 51st anniversary earlier this week, and pro-lifers have marked it in true life-affirming fashion by taking the time to stand up and witness for the preborn. This year, the governor of Alaska has gotten in on it, as well, as news outlets reported the pro-life flag was hanging outside his official residence for some days leading up to the anniversary.

(For more pro-life perspective on this unhappy anniversary, read another Students for Life of America (SFLA) blog entitled “Roe Has Been Reversed — But We Still Need to Reverse the Lie It Fed to Women 51 Years Ago Today.”)

According to the Juneau Empire, “The flag — a rarity beyond the official U.S. and Alaska flags flown at the governor’s mansion and other state buildings — is a political statement by Dunleavy who in his State of the State address last year he wanted “to make Alaska the most pro-life state in the country.”

“The governor is unapologetically pro-life,” Grant Robinson, a spokesperson for the governor, wrote in an email response to questions from the Empire. “Every person conceived deserves the right to life, and the governor wanted to fly the pro-life flag to show his support for this basic human right.”

For those unfamiliar with this flag, one pink and one blue stripe on a background of white are overlapped by a circle featuring two pink hands surrounding a set of blue and pink footprints. It was selected by the Pro-Life Flag Project, with which SFLA has partnered. You can read more about its origin, purpose, and symbolism by clicking HERE.

SFLA Pacific Northwest Regional Coordinator Sophia Di Piazza, who serves the Last Frontier State, spoke out in approval of the governor’s actions on behalf of SFLA students within Alaska, saying:

“As the SFLA Regional Coordinator for Alaska, I was proud to hear this reported, and the same goes for my pro-life student groups. As we persistently fight for the preborn and vulnerable families, meeting pro-abortion adversity every step of the way, it’s so encouraging to see our governor support the pro-life movement in such a manner. Our hope is that other elected officials across the country take note of Governor Dunleavy and also proudly wear their pro-life beliefs on their sleeve and in their actions.”

One of the ways the Pro-Life Generation marked the anniversary of the now-reversed Roe was through our National Pro-Life Summit in Washington D.C., the largest pro-life training event in the country. After all, what better way to rebuild our nation in the wake of this disastrous ruling than to train hundreds of pro-life students to become effective, life-affirming activists in both law and service? You can get a taste of this event by reading the highlights on our blog HERE or by watching the wrap-up video of the 2024 Summit below:
