Ella Schumacher, one of the National Leaders Collective’s (NLC) leaders of the month, is a Students for Life Action (SFLAction) State Captain attending Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Learn more about Schumacher’s activism, in her own words, below.
As a senior in high school, I joined the Thaddeus Stevens Fellowship. As I neared that fellowship’s end, I knew I had to get a new perspective on the pro-life movement. That’s when I saw that Students for Life of America (SFLA) had a fellowship that dove into the political impact of the pro-life movement.
After I applied, I got accepted into the SFLAction State Captains Program, and I can confidently say I learned how vital it is to have pro-life champions to represent and be a voice for the preborn. I’ll be forever grateful for the relationships I formed on both a personal and political level as I continue to fight for Life.
My first pro-life accomplishment this year was bringing a member of my group and a neighboring college member to Michigan for a door-knocking deployment, where we canvassed for Jem DeSana. We knocked on a total of 3,727 doors, and our efforts paid off: DeSana won his race.

On a personal level, I had the opportunity to participate in outreach within SFLA’s National Leaders Collective (NLC). This was my first time connecting with students in this setting. I heard their stories, shared some of mine, and encouraged them to apply to the NLC. I also reached over 40 students and connected with a few of them personally.
Finally, our group participated in two Life Chain events as a part of the Defund Planned Parenthood Life Chains aCROSS America. The Culture Project Missionaries – Isabel Pixa, Tessie Baumann, Megan Cox, Mitchell Bonvillian, and Benjamin Colombo – came out, showed me how to approach the activism in love, and prayed with me through the crazy Ohio weather. During the second Life Chain, I and another fellow named Katie Schroeder made our voices heard in front of Planned Parenthood in Toledo. Here, we engaged in two powerful conversations, one of which was a mind change!
Every single person has the desire to know that they aren’t alone. I will continue to be a voice for the preborn and their mothers until all mothers know that they are CHOSEN and LOVED.
