Boasting an unimpressive record on COVID alongside a struggling economy and an unprecedented homelessness crisis, California Governor Gavin Newsom has few achievements to enthuse his voter base. He’s leaning on an unfortunate attribute — his rabid support for abortion — hoping that his record of maintaining California as one of the most permissive abortion states will help him edge out his challengers in a recall election.
Newsom and his political allies are painting a bleak picture of abortion rights under a potential ascendant Republican. According to POLITICO, abortion supporters are “phone banking, knocking on doors, posting digital ads and social media messages, and holding events with Newsom and other lawmakers as ballots are mailed to voters,” with Planned Parenthood fearing that California voters have “become a little complacent about” what it means to support abortion.
Newsom, for his part, hasn’t been complacent about ticking off abortion industry wish list items. POLITICO reports that after the Trump Administration cut funding that went to abortion businesses, Newsom:
1. “Doubled state budget investments” in abortion.
2. Signed a bill forcing public university campuses to dispense chemical abortion pills.
3. Proclaimed California to be a haven for out-of-state women seeking abortion.
