Rep. Brecheen & Sen. Lankford Lead a Bicameral Letter to the Environmental Protection Agency Calling for Evaluation of Dangerous Abortion Water Pollution

Congressional Support for Students for Life Action’s Long-Term Push to Demand Environmental Testing to Determine the Impacts of No Test, Online Distribution of Chemical Abortion Pills More than DOUBLED in this Second Congressional letter

“Great leaders ask hard questions, making this letter to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) vital for consideration by the new Trump Administration,” said Students for Life’s Kristan Hawkins. “The Biden-Harris Administration recklessly used COVID to justify allowing No Test, Online Distribution of Chemical Abortion Pills, never checking whether the chemically tainted blood, placenta tissue, and human remains now flushed into our waterways by the hundreds of thousands was harming the environment. You don’t have to be pro-life to be concerned about endocrine disruptors in our waterways, potentially impacting our water safety, harming endangered species & our food supply, and perhaps even multiplying the rate of infertility.”

WASHINGTON D.C. (06-18-2025) – Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkins praised Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-OK) and Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) for leading a bicameral letter to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) asking that environmental analysis of abortion water pollution begin, in light of the deadly policies enacted by the Biden-Harris Administration. The previous pro-abortion duo used the COVID crisis to further deregulate Chemical Abortion Pills, leading to the flushing of chemically tainted blood, placenta tissue, and human remains  into our waterways. In four of five citizen petitions to the FDAStudents for Life of America (SFLA) called for environmental assessment in light of  Democrats essentially permitting the dumping of pathological medical waste. Similar calls for analysis have gone to the EPA.

EPA should track chemicals in the medical waste of abortion to ensure America’s waterways are safe

“In this new letter, members of the U.S. Congress echo Students for Life’s fears for water safety and demand evaluation of the global consequences of the reckless deregulation and lack of testing,” said Hawkins. “The Pro-Life Generation proudly stands with Rep. Josh Brecheen, Sen. James Lankford, and all who joined this effort to make sure that America has crystal clear water by demanding that the EPA test what’s in the water.”

Previously, Rep. Brecheen and then Sen. Marco Rubio led a bicameral letter asking the Biden-Harris Administration to ensure that their pro-abortion policy that permitted the dumping of endocrine disruptors into our waterways be evaluated for public safety.

The new letter, signed by 25 members of the U.S. House and U.S. Senate, contains additional member support – up from 11 members previously.  The members now call on EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to address the potential harms to those drinking water in America.

They write in part:

“We commend this administration’s dedication to protecting life and safeguarding public health. In light of these commitments, we write to express our concerns regarding mifepristone and its potential contaminant effects on our nation’s waters. In 2023, medication abortions accounted for more than 60% of all clinician-provided abortions that took place within the U.S. healthcare system—totaling roughly 648,500 medication abortions. These numbers do not reflect the unrecorded number of at-home medication abortions that were performed without the oversight of a clinician. It is imperative that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers evaluating the potential contaminant effects of this drug as the agency develops the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule 6 (UCMR 6).

“… In 1996, the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) issued an environmental assessment for mifepristone stating, “Mifepristone may enter the environment from excretion by patients, from disposal of pharmaceutical waste, or from emissions from manufacturing sites,” but declared that the drug could be “used and disposed of without any expected adverse environmental effects.” However, this assessment was conducted nearly three decades ago, long before the exponential rise in at-home chemical abortions and widespread use of mifepristone. Despite the CDER’s acknowledgement that mifepristone enters the environment, the EPA has yet to review its potential contaminant effects. We request that the EPA study the impact of the “byproducts” of mifepristone, such as the active metabolites that are entering our nation’s water system and threatening access to safe drinking water.

“… Furthermore, mifepristone is a potent progesterone blocker that disrupts hormonal balance in pregnant women to induce abortion. This raises questions about the drug’s potential endocrine-disrupting effects when present in drinking water supplies. If residual amounts of the drug and its metabolites persist in wastewater, prolonged exposure could potentially interfere with a person’s fertility, regardless of sex. We believe it is reckless to allow a known progesterone blocker to be flushed into America’s drinking water without knowing definitively if it impacts fertility rates.”

In a Newsweek opinion piece from Hawkins and Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) titled Biden Administration Puts Abortion Industry Profits Over Women’s Safetythey observed how the Biden Administration’s COVID response prioritized abortion over public safety. They wrote:

“The Biden Administration’s chemical abortion gambit also reveals a deep hypocrisy. Consider that on the same day news was breaking about the gutted health and safety standards for chemical abortion, the FDA also announced it was pulling the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine because, out of 7 million people who had taken it, six had suffered blood clots and one person died. Yet despite the fact that chemical abortion pills have been a factor in the deaths of more than 20 women and millions of unborn children, Biden’s FDA not only kept the drugs on the market, but authorized, in effect, a nationwide experiment in do-it-yourself abortions. There was no semblance of an ‘abundance of caution’ in the FDA’s abortion pill announcement … We cannot allow the COVID-19 crisis to be exploited to create an entirely new, and completely preventable, health crisis through mail-order, do-it-yourself abortions.”

Much of SFLA/SFLAction’s efforts have focused on the FDA’s mismanagement of deadly Chemical Abortion Pills.

PLG includes Students for Life Action (SFLAction), a 501c4, along with its 501c3 sister organization, Students for Life of America (SFLA), that together make up the nation’s largest, pro-life youth organization, managing a grassroots political and policy operation engaging Americans of all ages but with a special emphasis on the largest segment of voters — the Youth Vote. Headquartered in Fredericksburg, VA, PLG/SFLA/SFLAction serves more than 1,500 groups on middle, high school, college, medical, and law school campuses in all 50 states. Our team has more conversations with this generation targeted by the abortion lobby than any other pro-life operation in the world, each week reaching more than 4 million across social media platforms and averaging 1.3 million video views. In addition to SFLA/SFLAction, PLG leads multiple initiatives to lead and serve the future of the pro-life movement including the Campaign for Abortion Free Cities, Standing With You, and the Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement. Over more than 17 years, PLG CEO Kristan Hawkins has grown the operation into a more than $20M organization, now preparing for an abortion-free America.
