Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has introduced a new bill to the U.S. Senate that would strip the Chemical Abortion Pill mifepristone of its FDA approval and remove it from the market.

Hawley announced the “Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act” in a pro-life press conference, citing the high complication rates of the drug, the misleading FDA labels that underplay the dangers, and the lack of proper research into the drug’s effects on women.

Kristan Hawkins, President of Students for Life of America and Students for Life Action, wrote a statement of support for this bill.

“Chemical Abortion is the number one method of abortion in the U.S., and it continues to be a cascading death sentence for preborn children and their mothers, and now even extending to the environment and endangered species,” wrote Hawkins. “Students for Life has been at work for many years to address the no test, online distribution of Chemical Abortion Pills, which expose women to injury, infertility, and death, empowers abusers who force these pills on their victims, sometimes without their knowledge or consent. The Pro-Life Generation proudly supports Sen. Hawley’s ‘Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act’ that would revoke the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) original approval of Mifepristone.”

As explained by Hawley’s office:

The Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act would:

  • Withdraw the FDA’s approval of mifepristone for abortion.
  • Make distributing and labeling mifepristone for pregnancy termination violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act
  • Create a private right of action for women harmed by chemical abortion to sue manufacturers for damages.

A recent survey from Students for Life of America’s Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement conducted and released by Survey USA revealed that 94% of Gen Z and Millennial registered voters want a federal review of the Chemical Abortion Pill, with 31% saying it was “extremely” important to them.

And it isn’t shocking they want this. More than 1 in 10 women who take the Chemical Abortion Pill will experience serious complications from the pill.

Hawley invited several women to speak at the hearing who faced complications from Chemical Abortion Pills. Multiple attendees collapsed at the hearing from the shock of hearing their stories.

“The science is clear: the chemical abortion drug is inherently dangerous to women and prone to abuse. Yet major companies like Danco Laboratories are making billions off it,” said Sen. Hawley. “That’s why I am introducing new legislation to ban the use of mifepristone for abortion and empower women to sue its manufacturers. Congress must act now to protect the health and safety of women.”

Students for Life has long been leading the fight against the dangerous Chemical Abortion Pill. President Kristan Hawkins sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Marty Makary and other members of the Trump Administration calling on them to review the approval of mifepristone due to its various shortcomings. This includes the FDA approving the drug without conducting required environmental and clean water testing through the EPA, a problem Students for Life of America is calling on the FDA to address.

But the FDA has not addressed the glaring problems with mifepristone. In fact, they recently approved a generic form of the deadly pill.

All these errors make one thing clear: the Chemical Abortion Pill mifepristone should never have been approved. With the success of this bill, Sen. Hawley would right the wrong the FDA refuses to acknowledge.

“If passed, this law would save thousands of babies and women from these dangerous pills that should never have been put on the market,” wrote Hawkins in her statement of support. “Health and safety standards and testing for things like environmental harms have been ignored or fast-tracked, by calling pregnancy a disease ‘cured’ by abortion. Students for Life Action is proud of Sen. Hawley’s leadership on this critical issue.”
