Students for Life Action Slams Illinois Governor, Calling Him “Shameless” for Signing Law Mandating Sales of Dangerous Chemical Abortion Pills to College Students

“Governor J.B. Pritzker has shamelessly sold-out Illinois students to the abortion industry,” Students for Life Action’s Kristan Hawkins said. “This isn’t about healthcare. It’s about political payoffs to Planned Parenthood and abortion industry interests, sacrificing young women’s safety for an extremist agenda. Students shouldn’t have to pay for pills that kill.”

SPRINGFIELD, IL (08-28-2025) — Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkins slammed Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s for signing a bill forcing Chemical Abortion Pills onto public college campuses, calling it “outrageous that the abortion radicals are forcing today’s students to subsidize ending the lives of the next generation. Pregnancy is not a disease cured by abortion.” House Bill 3709 would require public colleges with student health centers to offer access to contraception and deadly Chemical Abortion Pills, turning college campuses into abortion distribution centers.

Illinois colleges, including the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the University of Illinois Chicago, and Illinois State University, all require students to pay a health service fee. Prairie State students will soon face mandatory fees that bankroll campus health centers for dispensing dangerous Chemical Abortion Pills.

HB 3709 mirrors extreme legislation already enacted in other states, such as California’s Senate Bill 24 (2019), Massachusetts’ H. 2399 (2022), and New York’s S1213A (2023)—all of which require public colleges with student health centers to offer Chemical Abortion Pills on campus. It’s no surprise Illinois lawmakers followed the radical playbook of California, New York, and Massachusetts.

These pills are not safe for women, and college campuses lack the emergency resources to handle the fallout. According to research from the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC), serious adverse events linked to the Chemical Abortion Pills are significantly underreported by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA)—occurring approximately 22 times more often than official figures suggest. The study suggests that more than 1 in 10 women who take the drug will experience at least one serious complication.

This isn’t SFLAction’s first time fighting the abortion industry on college and university campuses. SFLAction’s Protecting Life on College Campus Act, introduced in Congress, aimed to deny federal funds to schools pushing Chemical Abortion Pills through a “student-based service site.”

Students for Life’s recent Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement  YouGov poll shows that 9 in 10 young voters back this idea.

SFLAction will continue exposing the dangers of Chemical Abortion Pills through our nationwide campus campaign, This Is Chemical Abortion.
