“As a parent of children with complex, genetic medical issues, I know firsthand how the ‘Affordable’ part of the sales pitch in Obamacare is a flat-out lie,” said Students for Life’s Kristan Hawkins. “To add offense to financial injury, Obamacare doesn’t care for the least of these. Taxpayers in all 50 states subsidize abortion through the exchanges in abortion-loving states. Obamacare doesn’t deserve to live on as program, but, without life-saving Hyde protections, it definitely deserves to go down when it comes up for a vote.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (12-11-2025) – Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkins called on members of the U.S. House and Senate to oppose any continuation of Obamacare as is because Hyde protections, which limit taxpayer payments for abortion to only cases of rape, incest, or when a mother’s life is danger, are NOT in the failing healthcare framework. “My family’s experiences with Obamacare illustrate the many problems with government-managed plan. Just as predicted, abortion is covered in many places, and all taxpayers subsidize what every Democrat voted for and all Republicans must now fix.”
SFLAction will score any vote that extends Obamacare “as is,” as direct support of abortion. Hyde protections must, at the very least, be added.

ON BACKGROUND:
Hawkins observed: “Ultimately, a truly pro-life and pro-family healthcare system must protect every human life, empower parents, not bureaucracies in medical decision-making, and ensure that no taxpayer is forced to subsidize procedures that violate their deeply held convictions. Reforming healthcare means replacing the abortion subsidies and regulatory burdens built into Obamacare with policies that champion life, expand real choices for families, and promote affordable, transparent care driven by compassion rather than coercion.”
FIVE Reasons Obamacare is NOT Pro-Life or Pro-Family
Despite Obamacare’s goals of expanding access, it fails to uphold pro-life and pro-family values because it subsidizes insurance plans that cover abortions, burdens families with higher costs, and offers fewer choices. The joke is on the American People as we break down the farce and folly that is Obamacare (aka the so-called “Affordable Care Act”).
Here are just a few key reasons why Obamacare must be reformed or ended:
- NOT Affordable: Obamacare has an infamous reputation of straining families and draining their pockets. According to the Heritage Foundation, it has more than doubled in costs for families. Eleven years after the passage of Obamacare, Americans buying health insurance under the law are still worse off financially than before the health law was enacted. Even former Obama Administration healthcare policy staff say Obamacare was a mistake.
- Doesn’t “CARE” for the preborn: Obamacare allows massive federal subsidies (taxpayer dollars) to assist millions of Americans with purchasing health insurance plans that include abortion, which directly goes against the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment is already a federal law that prevents taxpayers’ funds from being used for elective abortions or healthcare plans that cover abortions. More than 2.5 million Americans are alive today thanks to the Hyde Amendment – enough people to fill more than 38 NFL stadiums.
- Doesn’t “ACT” in people’s best interest: Obamacare offers a limited network, which ultimately hurts families and takes away more choices of where they can receive the care they need. With high premiums, it puts middle- and lower-income families in a corner, with no choice but to opt out of health insurance altogether. Ultimately, Obamacare restricts the freedom families need to choose truly life-affirming care.
- Anti-family: Due to a lack of checks and balances, illegal immigrants are taking significant portions of the subsidies, ultimately taking precious resources away from American families who genuinely need them. The fraud, waste, and abuse has been out of control, with ineligible enrollees being unchecked and re-enrolled every year no questions asked, causing a complete mess in this healthcare system.
- Undoes the One Big Beautiful Bill: In the One Big Beautiful Bill, it finally ended Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood and big abortion, which makes up nearly $800 million in taxpayer funds paying for abortions. If these Obamacare subsidies were to be extended, all that work to defund big abortion would have been for nothing.
In the end, strengthening our healthcare system requires policies that affirm the value of every life and support the stability of the family. By pursuing reforms rooted in dignity and freedom, we can build a healthcare framework that truly serves both mothers and children.
