This Virginia State Senator & OBGYN Claims She “Delivers” … But Just for Planned Parenthood

When a politician makes the campaign promise that they’ll “deliver,” your first thought shouldn’t be whether they’ll follow through on their word — instead, it should be for whom exactly are they delivering? That is the question Students for Life of America (SFLA) Virginias Regional Coordinator Gavin Oxley recently posed with Virginia State Senate incumbent Dr. Siobhan S. Dunnavant. Her campaign slogan claims “Dunnavant delivers,” but is that true for anyone other than Planned Parenthood? Oxley doesn’t think so.

In a recent letter to the editor published at the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Oxley explained how Dunnavant’s abortion position (unrestricted elective abortion until 15 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions for rape, incest, fetal anomalies, and life of the mother) is the antithesis of equal medical care and legal protection for all.

He wrote, “[S]he claims to strive to “find common ground,” but in reality, Dunnavant is using a political guise to justify abandoning the Hippocratic Oath to cling to the power of public office.”

Oxley continued, “If humans are to have any value, every human must be equally valued or a hierarchical, classist system will reign. While life of the mother care is and should be protected, Dunnavant’s rape, incest, and severe fetal anomaly exceptions perpetuate systematic oppression by producing “grades” of human beings based on conception circumstances, age, and perceived abilities.”

As a mother of four with two children having Cystic Fibrosis, SFLA and Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins has written extensively on this topic — check out her op-ed HERE on why no child should be left behind with co-author Ryan Bomberger, who was conceived out of rape.

Instead of discriminating against children based upon circumstances beyond their control, Oxley makes the case in his letter that Dunnavant should direct her support to perinatal hospice programs and post-assault counseling. Unfamiliar with perinatal hospice? For more information, read another SFLA blog by Oxley entitled, “Perinatal Hospice Is the Compassionate Choice for Parents & Child.”

Oxley continued, “It is essential that politicians who wish to develop comprehensive and compelling abortion policy return to the science of the issue. As an obstetrician-gynecologist and state senator, Dunnavant holds a position with opportunity to develop such policy but has chosen to give up science — and people — for politics.”
