So-Called “Moderate” Republicans Standing in the Way of Once-in-a-Generation Effort to Defund Planned Parenthood

After decades of effort, Students for Life Action (SFLAction) and the entire pro-life movement stand on the brink of a colossal victory: the defunding of Planned Parenthood and all abortion vendors through the budget reconciliation process currently underway in Congress. We—at last—have the opportunity to cut some 500-700 million dollars in funding to the Abortion Goliath, Planned Parenthood, redirecting the money to medical locations where all the patients survive the visit.

However, certain “moderate” Republicans in Congress—if there is such a thing as a moderate who permits the continued killing of preborn children—are opposing the measure in the reconciliation process that would slash Planned Parenthood’s pipeline of taxpayer dollars.

To take advantage of this moment, SFLAction has:

  • We have met with and contacted every GOP member in the House Energy & Commerce, Senate Budget, and Senate Finance Committees. These key committees are where Republicans need to hold the line and not cave into making the language weaker or take it out altogether.
  • Over twenty district congressional offices have been visited by students who are constituents of the members in these key committees.
  • We have made hundreds of calls to key Congressional members on Capitol Hill, making it clear that they need to keep the bill text as is.

Key among these blockers are: U.S. Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Mike Lawler (R-NY). The Pro-Life Generation MUST get loud and let them know that we expect them to do the right thing here. Time is of the essence as we will not get another chance like this for a while.

Visit www.studentsforlifeaction.org/GOP for an easy way to reach out to your legislators and tell them to defund the nation’s number one abortion vendor.

SFLAction has also compiled a list of other legislators who are important targets for calls, emails, texts, and office visits with regard to this initiative. Please note, not all of these legislators oppose defunding Planned Parenthood—many of them are pro-life. However, even the pro-life legislators on this list still need to be contacted with words of encouragement and support for the measure.

This push comes as we’ve learned that there are even more abortions taking place and money lost to Planned Parenthood. Though they saw less than 2% patient increase compared to the previous report, Planned Parenthood got a 13% pay increase – from $699.3 million in 2022-2023 to $792.2 million. This means taxpayers now provide a staggering 39% of their total budget, up from 34%. At the same time, the number of lives ended by abortion at Planned Parenthood’s hands rose again: 402,200 – up from 392,715 in their last report – about a 2.4% increase over the last year, and a 7.5% increase over the course of the last two years.

The Pro-Life Generation stands ready to fight for the innocent lost to abortion. The consciences of taxpayers and, more importantly, the lives of preborn children, are at stake.
