On Monday, August 25, Students for Life Action (SFLAction) will head to the Texas Capitol once again to lobby for Life!
How did we get here? This started when SFLAction joined Texas Right to Life and other pro-life organizations & leaders in urging Texas Governor Greg Abbott to convene a special session for the SFLAction-inspired Women and Child Protection Act back in June.
The bill cleared the Senate during the main legislative session in April but stalled after advancing through the House State Affairs Committee in May.
This legislation would crack down on No Test, Chemical Abortion Pill traffickers, and they can be sued for up to $100,000. It also empowers the Texas Attorney General to file lawsuits on behalf of preborn children.
In July, Gov. Abbott called for pro-life legislation to be considered during the special session. After our Student Captain from Founders Academy of Leander Duke Denman testified on the bill (SB 6), it passed in the Senate State Affairs Committee on August 11th and passed the Senate Floor the next day.
However, there was no quorum in the Texas House of Representatives, preventing the bill from moving forward. Some Democratic lawmakers left the state to stop the legislative process over redistricting debates, and now they returned to the Texas Capitol as the second special session commenced.
The Women & Child Protection Act (now “lucky number” SB 7) passed the Senate State Affairs Committee again on August 15th and is expected to pass the Senate Floor.
Attorney General Ken Paxton also issued cease-and-desist letters to “several radical organizations demanding an end to illegal abortion pill shipments into Texas.”
