A major New York City hospital is ending sex-reassignment procedures for minors following intervention by the U.S. Department of Justice, putting one of the nation’s most contentious medical and political debates directly on Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s doorstep.
Mount Sinai agreed to stop providing child mutilations to minors as part of an agreement with the Trump Administration. The hospital has provided hormone treatments and surgeries to transgender patients. Students for Life has cited the dangers these “treatments” pose to vulnerable children. Puberty blocker Lupron has been associated with harmful side effects such as osteoporosis, mood disorders, seizures, cognitive impairment, and, when combined with cross-sex hormones, sterility.
The agreement goes further than ending the procedures. Mount Sinai must dedicate $2 million in free medical care to people suffering harmful consequences from transgender treatments they received as children, according to the report.
The development creates a stark contrast with the direction of the New York City government under Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
In June, Mamdani announced a $15 million “city investment” — or $15 million in compulsory taxpayer funding — to push so-called “gender-affirming” care, including a direct-care fund for providers targeting youth. His administration also directed the city’s Law Department, potentially through litigation, to prepare to combat federal efforts to restrict such care.
Mamdani has no shame about what those taxpayer dollars are intended to achieve. When asked on WNYC whether the funding would offer a back door for children after private hospitals refused to provide treatments under federal pressure, Mamdani said the $15 million commitment would “unlock exactly that.”
The contrast could hardly be clearer: while federal investigators are reasonably urging hospitals to abandon risky medical interventions on minors, New York City taxpayers are being forced to finance access to these harmful procedures.
The ideological movement surrounding Mamdani extends beyond City Hall.
Mamdani is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which backed his mayoral campaign. His administration’s policies on transgender issues take a page directly from the DSA’s broader cultish agenda, which aims to ensure transgender New Yorkers, especially minors, have unfettered access to transgender medical procedures at taxpayer expense.
The DSA’s Trans Rights & Bodily Autonomy Campaign Commission describes itself as “the largest hub for grassroots trans rights organizing in America.” Its resources include a “Trans Sanctuary City Toolkit” designed to manipulate activists into pushing local legislation to expand transgender medical access. The DSA has characterized transgender rights and abortion access as interconnected fronts in its broader political war campaign for bodily autonomy, while flagrantly disregarding that hard-working taxpayers are being forced to fund misguided ambitions to reassign biological sex.
That connection matters to Students for Life because SFLA rejects the underlying premise that biology can simply be subordinated to political ideology.
Earlier this year, Students for Life launched its first-ever “Wear the Truth Week”, sending shirts to hundreds of students nationwide bearing the message: “Human at conception. Sex is binary and unchangeable.” The campaign was explicitly designed to support students who believe in defending SFLA’s positions that human life begins at conception and that biological sex cannot be changed.
Those two issues may dominate different headlines, but SFLA sees them as resting on the same principle: biological realities do not disappear because politicians attempt to redefine them.
The Mount Sinai agreement does not occur in isolation. The article also states that Texas Children’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and Connecticut Children’s Hospital have also agreed in recent months to halt transgender procedures for minors.
As Mamdani’s administration commits millions of taxpayer dollars to providing a lethal back door to harmful transgender procedures, and as the DSA marches nationally to advance its bodily-autonomy agenda, SFLA’s response is defiantly different: Wear the truth, speak the truth, and refuse to allow political pressure to redefine biological reality.
