“The Pro-Life Generation went to work when the three former GOP ‘Sister Senators’ blocked a vote on protections for preborn infants from their earliest days of life. We will employ that same intensity in South Carolina to see a vote finally take place,” said Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins.

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA (02-26-2025) — Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkins applauds pro-life champion State Rep. John McCravy III and the Family Caucus for starting the work of this legislative session with a demand that protecting Life receive priority treatment. But now, SFLAction is getting loud to amplify the pro-life movement’s call that State House Speaker Murrell Smith and the House Republican Caucus prioritize the Human Life Protection Act in their prioritization of bills.
While we hope for the best, of concern to SFLAction is the appointment of pro-abortion, liberal Democrat Rep. Beth Bernstein to a key post by Smith and his Judiciary Committee Chairman Weston Newton. Currently, Bernstein serves on the House Judiciary Committee as Family and Probate Laws Subcommittee Chairwoman, the only Democrat to serve as a subcommittee chair.
Hawkins observed: “Students for Life Action joins with the South Carolina Family Caucus in calling on Speaker Smith to make the Human Life Protection Act a priority. The Pro-Life Generation waits with great anticipation to see whether the will of South Carolina voters will be honored by the Speaker by bringing up the legislation for a vote. The Human Life Protection Act was blocked in 2023 by the so-called GOP ‘Sister Senators,’ who have since been replaced – and we were glad to be a part of that effort. But we’re not holding our breath in light of the Speaker’s appointment of a pro-abortion Democrat as key subcommittee chairman.
“We are standing by – and standing ready — to see what the Speaker does going forward. We salute the members of the South Carolina Family Caucus who are fighting to see the Human Life Protection Act finally get to the Governor’s desk in South Carolina.”
“It’s very curious that despite this bill passing the South Carolina House by wide margins twice, this critical legislative priority would originally be sent to a subcommittee led by a representative who has spoken at pro-abortion rallies,” Hawkins said. “We cannot help but be concerned. The Speaker and Judiciary Committee Chair have a simple choice to make, advance the bill by making it a priority now, or risk the wrath of Republican primary voters. The Pro-Life Generation stands ready to again mobilize in the 2026 primaries and beyond.”
