“Going after the filibuster in the U.S. Senate to force a radical abortion agenda shows that the Democratic Party’s claims to value ‘democracy’ are fake news, and they are getting desperate. Pure political greed is at play as Kamala Harris and her allies let the corporate abortion interests engaged in this race know that they have their back,” said Students for Life Action Vice President of Media & Policy Kristi Hamrick. “Once again, abortion allies have to resort to tricks and rule changes to get what they want – taxpayers on the hook for ending precious, innocent life in the womb.”
Should this bad idea get to the floor of the Senate, Students for Life Action will score against the change.
WASHINGTON D.C. (09-25-2024) – As desperate political operatives, from Vice President Kamala Harris to Sen. Chuck Schumer, discuss ending the filibuster as a “carve out” to the rules that have been at play, Students for Life Action (SFLAction) Vice President for Media & Policy Kristi Hamrick noted that the Democratic Party was “unwisely playing with political fire.”
In 2013, Senate Democrats did a carve-out to force-fill the bench with their picks to change the rules for Presidential nominees to the courts. Given that change in protocol in 2017, when the GOP was back in control of the majority, that exception was expanded to include Supreme Court judicial nominees – and then former President Donald Trump nominated three to the high court.
“Students for Life Action will score against a change in the filibuster traditions to force abortion forward,” said Hamrick. “But should the Democrats apply bullying tactics to change the process, we will encourage the GOP to use those tools for a pro-life agenda.”
The U.S. Senate’s chosen rules have established a 60-vote margin in calling for a cloture vote to end a filibuster, a discussion of a matter that until 1917 could not be ended unless the senator chose to stop. In 1975, the number set to end the debate was 60.
“For decades, U.S. Senators have benefited from a forum to build consensus and work together that was so valued, Kamala Harris herself, while a senator signed a letter in support of keeping it as it was,” noted Hamrick. “Her betrayal of her former position is so severe, Sen. Joe Manchin will not endorse her flagging run for the Presidency.”
