Virginians just voted to give the Democrat dominated legislature power to redraw the Commonwealth’s district lines until 2030, rather than keeping with the nonpartisan Virginia Redistricting Commission adjusting the lines every 10 years. The initiative’s language of allowing for the redrawing of “one or more” districts certainly won’t stop at one. Now, the current 6-5 district split is set to change to a 10-1 split, with Democrats on top.
Despite a slightly less than 3% margin of victory, Democrats are now set to hold 90% of Virginia’s Congressional seats. Clearly, that is a gerrymandered misrepresentation of Virginians’ views.
Of course, Democrats did not present the initiative honestly, with the ballot question asking if Virginia should “temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections.” Firstly, giving one party 90% of the power with only 3% more votes is hardly fair. Secondly, it’s not as if the Democrat state legislature couldn’t continue to “temporarily” redistrict in the future. And thirdly, this wording sounds an awful lot like an attempt to influence people’s votes inside the voting booth, despite such influence being against Virginia law within 40 feet of a polling place entrance.
One legal challenge against the initiative was upheld in lower court but then struck down in the Virginia Supreme Court. More challenges are still in the works, however.
If the legal challenges fail, redistricting only spells further disaster for Virginia that will reach beyond state lines to affect the entire country. The same Democrats working to eliminate minimum penalties for rapists and child pornography possession and distribution; constitutionally remove parental consent for minors in abortions and allow abortion through birth, up to and including infanticide; and create and increase taxes on income, counseling, local sales, home and vehicle repairs, gym memberships, highway use, and new cars would tighten their grip on the Commonwealth and replace four Republicans in national government seats.
While it remains to be seen what will happen with the legal challenges, one thing is for sure: The fight must continue to defend those who can’t defend themselves and speak up when injustice occurs. Students for Life Action refuses to be silenced and won’t stop fighting until abortion is illegal and unthinkable.
