Ohio Heartbeat Abortion Prevention Act Has Already Made Significant Impact on Saving Preborn Life, Says Students for Life Action

“On Tuesday, November 7th, Ohioans will go to the polls to determine if their state will be a bastion for the protection of preborn children or embrace limitless abortion – policies so extreme that not even California allows it,” said SFLAction’s Kristan Hawkins. “I want voters to especially consider that if the laws hadn’t been on the books, more than 3,000 more children would have PERISHED this year. That is what’s at stake in the Buckeye state.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (10-4-2023) Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkins made the following statement as data coming out of Ohio is proving that the Heartbeat Abortion Prevention Act was working as designed. According to newly released data from the Ohio Department of Health’s, “a total of 18,488 induced pregnancy terminations were reported in Ohio for 2022, compared to 21,813 in 2021”, an almost 15% reduction. The report identified that the vast majority of the abortion recipients were black (48.4%) and before 12 weeks (89.7%) – a trend that’s been seen in other states.

“On Tuesday, November 7th, Ohians will go to the polls to determine if their state will be a bastion for the protection of the preborn or embrace limitless abortion – policies so extreme that not even California allows it,” said Hawkins. “I want voters to especially consider that if the laws hadn’t been on the books, more than 3,000 children would have perished this year. That is what’s at stake in the Buckeye state.”

Polling conducted by NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll in April 2023 showed that nearly almost seven in ten Americans believe abortion needs limits – a far cry from what the Ohio ballot measure would permit:

  • Any attempt to “burden, penalize, prohibit, interfere with, or discriminate” against abortion would be prohibited.
  • A “right” to sterilizing treatments, by saying that “reproductive decisions” must be allowed.
  • Parental involvement and notification will be attacked, by defining a “right” for “individuals” to get abortions, meaning citizens of all ages.
  • Any “person” that “assists” an “individual” to get an abortion, or receive sterilizing surgery, or exposure to irreversible hormones will be protected against prosecution.
  • Prevents criminal prosecution of instances where abortion is used to cover up crimes like rape.
  • Opens the door to Ohioans’ tax money being used to pay for abortion.

SFLAction has been on the ground in Ohio for months now, building up an army of volunteers, registering voters, engaging students on college campuses through our Stop Abortion Extremism Tour, leading political workshops at schools like Franciscan University, and rallying in support of the states Heartbeat Laws at the Ohio State Supreme Court.

This week, our sister organization Students for Life of America was onsite at Franciscan University, where students and staff raised awareness around Issue 1 as abortion extremism, and successfully registered 100 new students to vote.

“Late term abortion is literally on the ballot,” said Hawkins. “And we are not backing down from the abortion industrial complex in the State of Ohio!”

Students for Life Action (SFLAction), a 501c4, along with its 501c3 sister organization, Students for Life of America (SFLA), make up the nation’s largest, pro-life youth organization, managing a political and policy operation engaging Americans of all ages but with a special emphasis on the largest segment of voters — the Youth Vote. Together they provide political, legal, educational, and community support for women and children, born and preborn. Headquartered in Fredericksburg, VA, SFLA serves more than 1,400 groups on middle, high school, college, medical, and law school campuses in all 50 states. SFLA and SFLAction have more conversations with this generation targeted by the abortion lobby than any other pro-life operation in the world, each week reaching more than 4 million across social media platforms and averaging 1.3 million video views. SFLA has also launched multiple initiatives to lead and serve  the future of the pro-life movement including the Campaign for Abortion Free Cities, Standing With You, and the Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement . Over more than 17 years, President Kristan Hawkins has grown SFLAction/SFLA and the Pro-Life Generation into a nearly $20M organization, now preparing for an abortion-free America.
