Pregnancy Resource Centers Are Under Fire by a New Jersey Congressman – Here’s Why

In a sane world, an institution offering free resources, care, and guidance to pregnant mothers would be praised and emulated. That is, unless you’re a pro-abortion politician who received large amounts of money from Planned Parenthood.

That particular example fits the bill for one Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat from New Jersey’s fifth district. Evidently, he’s been on the warpath against Pregnancy Resource Centers, proving that all of society’s real villains (drug dealers, murderers, rapists, and so forth) have all been successfully vanquished. Rep. Gottheimer weeps, for there are no more worlds left to conquer.

In January 2024, the Congressman issued a press release, where he called Pregnancy Resource Centers “deceptive anti-choice clinics.” It continued:

“Instead, they manipulate women in a vulnerable situation, and push their own ideological agenda. Many of these clinics have photos of what look like doctors, but the truth is there are no doctors or nurses inside.”

Now, of course, none of this is true – par for the course for the pro-abortion extremists in the Democrat Party. Students for Life Action (SFLAction) joined Democrats for Life and New Jersey Right to Life at a rally in front of Rep. Gottheimer’s office on February 28to challenge his lies.

Speaking for SFLAction, Northeast Regional Coordinator Penelope Rose delivered remarks at the press conference, highlighting the good Pregnancy Resource Centers do across America and Students for Life of America’s commitment to similar care through Standing with You. This resource connects pregnant mothers with other women who know what an unexpected pregnancy feels like, empowering them women to choose both their child and their dreams.

Despite the rhetoric from Rep. Gottheimer, women do receive real medical help, real healthcare support, and real resources to protect mother and baby alike. And unlike Planned Parenthood, most things are free,” said Rose. “Yet, Rep. Gottheimer wants to shut down these pregnancy centers, ironically taking away choice from women who wish to seek out compassionate, life-affirming care at facilities that offer more than just the barbarism of abortion.”

Pregnancy Resource Centers give women the true dignity of real choice. They typically offer pregnant mothers:

  • Material resources
  • Parenting education classes
  • Emotional support
  • Other vital medical care

All of this is often done for free. And once again, contrary to Rep. Gottheimer’s attacks, these clinics follow medical board requirements and state laws regulating licensed professionals nationwide. A 2019 report from Charlotte Lozier Institute showed that more than 10,000 licensed medical workers served clients as staff and volunteers at pregnancy resource centers.

Not only that – the care that mothers received at these centers was superior to what they received at abortion clinics.

It’s worth noting that Rep. Gottheimer’s home state of New Jersey isn’t exactly a place lacking abortion. The state has the highest abortion rate in the United States, with 29.2 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 years old according to an article by US News and World Report. The state also has 20 Planned Parenthood locations.

However, of note is the fact that Federally Qualified Health Centers and pregnancy resource centers outnumber Planned Parenthood 14-to-one, according to a 2022 report from the Charlotte Lozier Institute.

Perhaps that’s the primary issue: Pregnancy Resource Centers are competition for Rep. Gottheimer’s donors.

According to OpenSecrets.org, a website tracking political donations and influence, Rep. Gottheimer is one of the top Democrat recipients of Planned Parenthood funds for elections in 2021 – 2022. He received $10,000 from them, matching the largest amounts also give to other House Democrat candidates in that election cycle.

As with so much that happens in Washington D.C., the old maxim of follow the money rings true: Rep. Gottheimer’s interest in going after these clinics is likely politically motivated – which only illustrates how disgusting it is that his victims would be pregnant mothers and preborn children.

On the flip side, you can follow the lack of money to see the goodness that comes from what Pregnancy Resource Centers are trying to do: encourage women to embrace motherhood with the support of the community and resources to help her thrive – all for free.

We know where we stand.
