Right on Rubio: Opposing Rape & Incest Exceptions Dismembers Stereotypes, Not Babies

Repeat after us: You can support life-saving procedures for women while opposing abortion exceptions that place a merit value on the night of your conception. This is exactly what Students for Life Action (SFLAction) has supported through our legislative efforts to protect women and the preborn.

While we’ve historically disavowed the discriminatory rape and incest exceptions considering preborn babies are not to blame for the circumstances of their conception, SFLAction has also consistently stood up for policies that support saving the life of a mother. That’s why we were thrilled to see Florida’s Senator Marco Rubio publicly champion this measure in a recent interview.

During his conversation with CBS4 News Miami’s Jim DeFede, Sen. Rubio said, “I do not believe that the dignity and the worth of human life is tied to the circumstances of conception.”

If that didn’t explode the minds of the abortion lobby and media enough, Sen. Rubio added, “I believe that we should be protecting innocent human life from the moment of conception.” The Senator’s bold support of laws that protect the dignity of human life is what SFLAction hopes to see more of from other leaders as the November elections near.

During the interview, Sen. Rubio also made the important distinction to not only protect life from the moment of conception, but he also rightfully reminded the host that we regard the preborn with personhood in other laws.

“An unborn human being has rights; we recognize that in our law already,” Sen. Rubio added. “If a pregnant woman is killed in a car accident by a negligent driver, that driver is not charged with one count of manslaughter, but two counts of manslaughter because our law already recognizes that’s a human life.”

In the horrific and tragic cases of rape or incest, SFLAction firmly believes in holding perpetrators accountable to the full extent of the law. It is also our firm belief that any child conceived in such terrible circumstances is not to be blamed or treated as disposable because the sins of their father.

We applaud Sen. Rubio’s commitment to protecting the preborn from the moment of conception in accordance with 95% of biologists who say life begins at fertilization (conception), and his opposition to rape and incest exceptions that create an unfair value system on the preborn.

After all, plenty of people go on to live prosperous lives after their mothers suffered tragedies – such as rape – and chose life. Take it from Ryan Bomberger, who tweeted on his birthday: “Though I was conceived in rape, I was adopted in love. My birth mom’s courageous decision will cause reverberations for generations. So grateful that I’m able to love and be loved!”
