“When weak-on-life Republicans refused to support our ‘Life at Conception Act’ in South Carolina, we asked them to reconsider and gave them every chance to change their minds – and we warned them there would be consequences for their betrayal of preborn babies and mothers,” said SFLAction’s Kristan Hawkins. “That day has now come, and they have paid the price, but the work is not done, and one final effort remains to remove – State Sen. Katrina Shealy from office.”

COLUMBIA, SC (06-17-2024) – After last week’s rout of multiple New York Times–supported, pro-abortion Republicans in the South Carolina State Primary races, Students for Life Action (SFLAction) is calling for one final effort in this election cycle to replace Sen. Katrina Shealy.
SFLAction President Kristan Hawkins said, “Last week we proved that a sustained and targeted campaign of flyering, digital ads, door knocking, and grassroots advocacy can flip a legislature on its head. With 10 pro-life victories, including against key targets like Sens. Sandy Senn and Penry Gustafson, we are going to double down on our efforts against Senator Katrina Shealy. Two down, one left to go!”
SFLAction prioritized South Carolina as a strategic target after the 2023 defeat of the Human Life Protection Act, where a handful of Republicans sided with the Democrats to filibuster and block this legislation that would have ended abortion in the Palmetto State.
In the primary race between State Sen. Sandy Senn and pro-life candidate Matt Leber, the margin of victory was only 31 votes, showcasing how critical SFLAction’s deployment of knocking more than 1,000 doors in her district were to securing pro-life victory.
Other grassroots program in South Carolina included:
- 37,407 pieces of mail
- 110,641 text messages
- 47,011 phone calls
- 2,572 doors knocked
In the past few years, SFLAction has been engaged in South Carolina through a series of lobby days and advocacy events with lawmakers, including bringing them “spines” when they failed to act in defense of life and support H.3774, the Human Life Protection Act.
“Ultimately these weak-on-life legislators had the chance to do the right thing – and we gave them multiple opportunities to show us their pro-life Bonafides,” Hawkins. “We warned them this day would come, and now it’s here. They refused to grow a spine, or even take one that we provided for them. Now, they can accept an empty box to pack their offices and step aside for real pro-life leadership in South Carolina.”
SFLAction’s commitment to shaping a pro-life vision for America is laid out in our GOP for Life Campaign, where we are calling on Republican leaders to maintain and defend pro-life laws and protections within the GOP party platform.
