SFLAction will score the “Pregnant Students’ Rights Act” as well as sponsorship of the bill
WASHINGTON D.C. (01-27-2026) – Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkins called on the U.S. Senate to vote in support of the “Pregnant Students’ Rights Act,” which would demand pregnant and parenting students be informed about the help available to them. The measure was introduced for a third time in the U.S. House by Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) and passed 217 to 211, with one Democrat vote. Hawkins said, “No matter what party a U.S. Senators comes from, all of them should be able to stand together in favor of letting pregnant and parenting students know that they can help while in school. Title IX (nine) rights require that students be protected and their opportunities preserved. For those trying to take care of their families by getting an education, this bill could make a life-changing difference.”
For pro-life legislators, more help can equal more support for abortion limits. Overall, more than three in 10 registered youth voters (34%) would be more willing to accept limits on abortion if they knew that the state and federal government offered increased support for mothers, children, and families, according to Students for Life’s Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement Survey USA poll just released and available here.
Because there are so few pro-life votes, SFLAction also scores sponsorship of pro-life legislation in our Pro-Life Generation Report Card. Vision & Values are graded together. This measure will be a scored vote and a scored sponsorship.
The measure, which also passed the U.S. House in the 118th Congressional Session, remains largely unchanged. It demands that pregnant and parenting students get the information they need to accomplish all their goals for their families. The bill:
- Requires colleges and universities to inform prospective and enrolled students on the rights and resources, including protections and accommodations, available for pregnant students while enrolled at the institution, as a condition of Title IV funding.
- Ensures universities disseminate information regarding the rights and protections for pregnant students to carry a pregnancy to term through emails, student handbooks, at orientation, on university websites, and at student health or counseling centers.
- Requires universities to inform students how to file a Title IX complaint with the Department of Education or with the institution if a student believes that her Title IX rights were violated.
Students for Life of America’s Standing with You initiative includes many resources for pregnant and parenting women, including information on Title IX rights and requirements. For years, SFLA has been pushing for the passage of the Pregnant and Parenting Bill of Rights. Learn more here.
As we previously reported on our Title IX work on campuses: “Ruth Asmarzadeh, suffered from Title IX violations after unexpectedly finding herself pregnant as a college student in Colorado. Due to the timing of her child’s birth, Ruth was physically unable to take her final exams. Her school refused to arrange another time for her to take the tests, resulting in her professors failing her and ultimately losing her financial aid. (Fortunately, Students for Life of America stepped in to help her through our Standing With You initiative.)”
