“The Supreme Court has made it clear that school officials cannot stalk students off campus to punish them for non-violent speech. In this case, it’s the adults who acted like ‘snowflakes,’ falling apart when they did not like a cheerleader’s frustrations,” said SFLA/SFLAction’s Kristan Hawkins.
WASHINGTON D.C. (June 23, 2021) – Students for Life of America/SFLAction President Kristan Hawkins called today’s 8-1 decision in the Mahony School District case “a victory for students who deserve the same First Amendment protections as everyone else, as well as a reprieve from heavy handed officials who can’t tell the difference between speech they don’t like and speech that causes problems.”
Writing at Fox News on the case earlier this year, Hawkins observed: “Pro-life students are all too familiar with similar retaliation by fellow students and school administrators for their free speech expressions. Unlike the cheerleader’s language, it is not vulgarity that prompts crackdowns on pro-life free speech, but the expression of a worldview that counters the prevailing pro-choice narrative in higher education … The Biden-Harris administration touts plans for free child care and free community college, but the nation’s leaders need to spend more time focused on protecting what is already free – our constitutionally guaranteed speech – especially at taxpayer-funded colleges and universities. We don’t need politically correct instruction and woke punishments. We need to hear from each other.”
