The Democrat Defenders of Preborn Life

There’s an idea that the pro-life movement only exists as a Republican or right-wing monoculture. Or that only those associated with the Christian Jewish, or Mormon faiths are staunchly opposed to this practice. However, according to polling by Gallup, about 26% of Democrats describe themselves as “pro-life.” With that rather large number in mind, it’s worth highlighting the Democrats who, imperfectly or not, have taken part in this sacred crusade to protect the lives of the preborn and the safety of pregnant women everywhere.

Senator Joe Manchin, WV

Manchin has remained one of the few moderate Democrats in the Senate over the years, and the only Senate Democrat who in 2022 joined Republicans to block the advancement of legislation that would’ve codified abortion  into federal law. Just recently, Manchin also blocked a Department of Veterans Affairs nomination from advancing over the agency’s policy on abortion.

Former Representative Tulsi Gabbard, HI

The Army veteran from the Aloha state is recognized as a moderate on many issues and most notably made waves for derailing Kamala Harris’ Presidential ambitions. However, she’s also infamous among the Democrats for introducing pro-life legislation. According to Democrats for Life of America, “Former Democratic Presidential Candidate Tulsi Gabbard introduced her SECOND Pro-Life bill this week, which would amend Title 18 of the U.S. code to give pain-capable fetuses rights under the law.”

Former Tennessee state Representative John DeBerry Jr.

Because of the voting record on abortion and school choice, state Democrats decided he couldn’t run in their primary, and he lost his re-election bid as an independent in 2020. It was a seat he held for almost 26 years. “The people in my district did not take me off the ballot,” DeBerry said. “A tribunal took me off the ballot that has absolutely nothing to do with my district.”

Connecticut General Assembly Representative Trenee McGee

One of the youngest and newest members of Connecticut’s state offices, she has been vocally opposed to abortion since being elected. She spoke at the March for Life in 2023, saying “the young generations of black, Latino, people of color and indigenous peoples are taking their rightful place to expose the mass genocide of our children.”

Former Morristown Democratic Committee Chairman Aaron Oliver

In 2021, the Morristown Democratic Committee voted to remove Aaron Oliver, an Episcopal priest and Army veteran, from the position of chairman because of his pro-life views. He said “Whole Life Democrats in our communities are asking the Democratic Party to be true to its principles of defending the vulnerable and marginalized. This includes women, unborn children, and people at every stage of life.” He stood firm to the end against the excesses of the Reproductive Freedom Act.

Michigan state Representative Karen Whitsett

On September 29, 2023, Rep. Whitsett drove the progressive media mad when she stepped in to block some of the most extreme abortion laws in the nation from passing. According to “reporting” by Jezebel, “Whitsett’s sticking points is the repealing of the state’s 24-hour waiting period before an abortion.”

The common thread you’ll notice is that most of these Democrats are former Democrats or ones who have fallen out of favor with their political party, which has grown more extreme on the issue over the years. We applaud them for their bravery and for standing firm on the principles of protecting the preborn, no matter the professional costs.
