President Donald Trump’s declaration that he would not support a national abortion law unsurprisingly generated outrage and statements of disappointment from many in the pro-life movement and the Conservative movement at large. However, there may be an angle to the decision that’s being missed: What would’ve happened if the long-rumored 15 week law that President Trump had been flirting with was picked as the national standard?
Students for Life Action’s President Kristan Hawkins summarized it best today:
“I am seeing a lot of concern about Trump not calling for a national abortion policy. And trust me, I get it – we at the Pro-Life Generation are 100% for a national pro-life law. However, we need to stop and consider a few things…
- GOP insiders were calling for a 15 or 16 week limit on abortion, which would’ve allowed more than 9 out of 10 abortions to continue, and, by either intent or by accident, would set up a very tough European-like stalemate on abortion.
- Staking out a federal standard on abortion that would undermine the positions of many other states that acted with courage to protect women and children and could have hurt Students for Life Action and our movement’s work to pass strong pro-life legislation and elect courageous pro-life leaders who will work with us to end all abortions or, at least, when a child’s heartbeat could be heard.
- This strategic position keeps the pressure on Democrats and their abortion extremism instead of letting their fundraising machines stir up their radical base over threats about a late-term abortion “ban” that would only save 4-6% of children.
- There is much President Donald Trump must still do to protect innocent children if re-elected… starting with pro-life appointments for his VP running-mate, cabinet secretaries, and working to undo the radical actions of Joe Biden to shove abortion down the throats of all Americans, via the Department of Defense, The United States Federal Drug Administration, The Environmental Protections Agency, and more.
- Our ultimate goal in the pro-life movement is federal protection of human life. Your human right not to be killed shouldn’t begin or end at a state line. However, it’s going to take time to get there, and the votes we need in the Senate and state legislatures. BUT WE WILL.
That is why the Pro-Life Generation is working non-stop to grow and mobilize our movement for this long fight. THIS IS A MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT.
Trump made the right call – and this leaves room for better action to be taken down the road.”
SFLAction also issued a statement earlier in the day, encouraging President Trump to continue listening to pro-lifers as he has done for months with Students for Life of America.
