Sen. Lankford Delivers a Pro-Life Senate Floor Speech for the Ages

Earlier this week, Sen. James Lankford (R-OK), one of the top pro-life senators in America, delivered a fantastic floor speech laying out the fundamentals of Life in law and service. Too often, it’s easy to move past the basic questions that Sen. Lankford poses in his speech, when he shared a story about the time one of his daughters shared with him that she was pregnant:

“No one asks us is it really a baby or is it a fetus? No one said you just have tissue. They ask us questions like have you thought of a name? Have you figured out how to install the car seat yet? Those are the questions that people asked us. Every person we talked to, every person we shared this with, all acknowledge the reality that this is baby.”

In another great moment from Sen. Lankford’s speech, he said: “If two ladies are walking down the same street… both of them say 18 weeks pregnant. Those two ladies on opposite sides of the street, one steps into her work place and a baby shower. The folks at work are asking her about the car seat, the crib, baby names, expenses and things.

And the other woman, 18 weeks pregnant, is heading to get a surgical abortion. So I ask the question of those two children – what is the difference between those two children?

Both are 18 weeks of development. One is being celebrated and prepared for. And one will be disposed of.

What is the difference between the two? We as Americans are trying to figure the answer to that exact question. When is a child, a child? Or when are they not a child?”

Ultimately, we know a child becomes a child and a sacred life beginning at conception – and biologists agree.

An NIH published study reports that “biologists from 1,058 academic institutions around the world assessed survey items on when a human’s life begins and, overall, 96% (5337 out of 5577) affirmed the fertilization view. The founding principles of the field Science Communication suggest that scientists have an ethical and professional obligation to inform Americans, as well as people around the world, about scientific developments so members of the public can be empowered to make life decisions that are consistent with the best information available.”

Abortion supporters have been trying to convince Americans for decades that “fertilized eggs” are not a human being to dehumanize the preborn. Yet, a fertilized egg IS a human embryo. 95% of biologists, including pro-abortion ones, agree that human life begins at the moment of fertilization – when the sperm and egg unite and create a genetically distinct human being.

Protections are needed for this scientific reality – and that’s why on July 1, Sen. Lankford will be our special guest speaker as Students for Life Action (SFLAction) encourages the GOP to remain pro-life, ahead of the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin on July 15 through 18.

This is especially important given that the GOP is preparing to craft the first official platform on abortion since the reversal of Roe v. Wade. SFLAction’s commitment to shaping a pro-life vision for America is laid out in our GOP for Life campaign, where we are calling on Republican leaders to maintain and defend pro-life laws and protections within the GOP party platform.

Sen. Lankford is well positioned to speak to the importance of this issue, beyond his superb speech in the Senate. During our most recent Pro-Life Generation Report Card, Sen. Lankford scored a perfect “A+” for his voting record in the 118th Congress, and his support of numerous pieces of SFLAction supported pro-life legislation. SFLAction was also proud to support his bid to become Senator of Oklahoma in 2022 during his primary.
