Virginia Democrats Streamlined the Approval of an Extreme Pro-Abortion Constitutional Amendment, Showing Their Priorities Lie not with Human Rights or Their Constituents, but with Big Abortion and the “Right” to Kill Preborn Babies

RICHMOND, VA. (01-12-2026) – Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkin condemned the actions of Virginia State House and Senate Democrats for streamlining passage of the extreme pro-abortion Virginia HJ1 Constitutional Amendment (“Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment”) and called on Virginia voters to VOTE NO in November to protect Life. “The reckless fealty to abortion can be seen in the fast-tracking of a vote to amend an historic document to allow for a quick death for the preborn. As Virginia is the home of our national headquarters, we will prioritize this fight, as we did in the recent election cycle,” said Hawkins.
With this Constitutional Amendment, Democrats blatantly disregard the welfare of women, children, and preborn children as they ignore the values of their constituents. As reported by the Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement, only 9% of Millennial and Gen Z voters in 2025 supported abortion through all nine months, up to and including infanticide—the crux of this Constitutional Amendment and a key aspect of the Democratic Party Platform.
Here is what the Constitutional Amendment will enshrine in Virginia if passed in November:
- Legalization of abortion through the third trimester (up to nine months), based on a single physician’s judgement.
- Legalization of infanticide by ending the requirement for babies born alive during an abortion to receive life-sustaining medical care.
- Removal of parental consent requirement for abortions committed on minors, making minors more susceptible to sexual abuse and trafficking.
- Removal of informed consent requirement for abortions.
- Ending of health regulations for abortion vendors.
From 2023-2024, Virginia had the largest spike in reported abortions in the country—a staggering jump from 33,400 to 39,000—plus the largest increase in abortions committed on women from out of state. The passage of this Constitutional Amendment will only make this egregious Human Rights issue worse.
