Students for Life Action Applauds Advancement of TWO Pro-Life Candidates in Iowa Primaries

“Iowa voters made their voices heard tonight, and they’re choosing LIFE,” said SFLAction’s Chanel Prunier. “There’s a battle for preborn life raging in Iowa, and results show voters are eager to end abortion and close abortuaries completely and to address the flood of dangerous Chemical Abortion Pills into the Buckeye state.”

DES MOINES (06-04-2024) Students for Life Action (SFLAction) celebrates the election of two pro-life leaders in Iowa’s House and Senate primary races. SFLAction Vice President of Political Affairs Chanel Prunier said, “Iowa voters are ahead of legislators in clamoring for the end to abortion in the state. Tonight’s primary winners, now moving onto the November general election, provide the best opportunity to ensure preborn lives and pregnant mothers alike are protected in Iowa.”

During the 2023 legislative session Last session, Students for Life Action had two priority bills currently before the Iowa state legislature – a Life at Conception Act and Chemical Abortion Prevention Act. In 2022, the legislature voted down the Chemical Abortion bill, and Students for Life Action was active in primary elections to hold incumbent legislators accountable for failing to support these pro-life laws and to add new champions identified by their survey program.

Numerous successful candidates returned the Students for Life Action Candidate Survey and pledged to vote pro-life 100%, including:

Samantha Fett (House District 22)

  • Her opponent is former legislator Garrett Gobble who voted against our Chemical Abortion legislation.

Judd Lawler (House District 91)

  • Completed the SFLAction Candidate Survey

Leading up to the election, SFLAction sent out 15,040 text messages, made 12,688 phone calls, distributed 2,674 pieces of direct mail, and knocked on 785 doors across five targeted districts.

Just recently, SFLAction released its second Pro-Life Generation Report Card, scoring the 118th Congress on key pro-life votes, legislation co-sponsorships, and stances in defense of the preborn so far this Congressional cycle. The four U.S. House of Representatives and two U.S. Senators’ pro-life voting records resulted in an averaged total score of a “B+” for Iowa.

In Iowa, SFLAction has been fighting for the preborn and mothers while educating and engaging lawmakers and voters on the need to expand and protect pro-life protections. Below are examples of SFLAction’s impact:

  • SFLAction supported Gov. Kim Reynolds’ signing The Heartbeat Abortion Prevention Act in Iowa into effect, after months of advocacy on the issue.

  • SFLAction also worked alongside State Rep. Jeff Shipley in 2021, and 2023 to introduce legislation, HF 146, that would combat the deadly distribution of Chemical Abortion Pills. These pills lead to injury, infertility, death, and misuse from abusers, and contain “endocrine disruptors” that interfere with a body’s hormones and are linked with developmental, reproductive, brain, immune system functions as well as tainting our food supply and harming livestock.

SFLAction’s commitment to shaping a pro-life vision for America is laid out in our GOP for Life campaign, where we are calling on Republican leaders to maintain and defend pro-life laws and protections within the GOP party platform.
