Students for Life Launches Nationwide GOTV Effort Targeting Faith-Based Voters, Beginning at James Talarico’s Church

AUSTIN, Texas (09-14-2026) — On Sunday, Sept. 13, Students for Life of America (SFLA) launched a nationwide church-flyering Get Out the Pro-Life Vote campaign outside the longtime church of the Democrat nominee for U.S. Senate, James Talarico. Talarico’s increasingly public effort to reconcile Christianity with abortion has drawn national attention, especially among Bible-believing Christians. “James Talarico has made the Bible part of his campaign for abortion, so we’re taking the pro-life message directly to the churches and communities where that argument is being made,” said SFLAction Vice President Lane Koch. “You cannot claim Scripture has nothing to say about abortion and then turn around and use Scripture to build a theological defense for it. Our students will make the case that the Bible is pro-life and that Christians should stand for mothers and their children, born and preborn.”
St. Andrew’s has a history of progressive activism, while longtime member James Talarico has used biblical arguments to advocate for abortion access. The Austin event marked the first stop in an SFLA initiative initially planned to reach more than 100 churches nationwide. Pro-life students and activists will distribute educational materials and challenge efforts to use Christianity and Scripture to justify abortion.

SFLA’s first demonstration took place outside St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 14311 Wells Port Drive in Austin, led by Texas Regional Coordinator Megan Roos alongside student volunteers and pro-life activists. Flyers were also distributed at other Austin-area churches.
Talarico has made his Christian faith a central component of his political identity while arguing that Christianity is compatible with legal abortion. In a May 2026 interview with Jamie Kern Lima, Talarico said his abortion position comes not despite his Christian faith but because of it, while declaring, “Jesus never talks about abortion. The Bible is silent on abortion.”
But Talarico has also affirmatively used Scripture to construct an argument for abortion rights. Discussing the Annunciation and the Virgin Mary, Talarico has argued that Mary’s response to the angel Gabriel illustrates bodily autonomy and consent, saying that “creation has to be done with consent.” In a 2022 sermon at St. Andrew’s, Talarico argued that Christianity and support for abortion are compatible while encouraging Christians who support abortion rights to become more outspoken.
That contradiction, claiming the Bible is “silent” on abortion while simultaneously using biblical narratives to justify abortion, was a central focus of SFLA’s Sept. 13 demonstration.
