“‘I’m more Christian than you’ is the most Christian statement a person could make,” said no one ever.
Yet that’s the attitude adopted by Democrats’ newest party champion, U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico. Talarico excels at twisting Scripture to align with his version of Christianity, one that is wildly out of touch with the actual teachings of Christ.
For one, his claim that the Bible doesn’t mention gay marriage and abortion is wildly untrue. See Genesis 1:27-28, Genesis 2:24, Leviticus 18:22, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, the story of, and many references to (including by Jesus), Sodom and Gomorrah, and many more verses on marriage and homosexual relations; see Proverbs 6:16-17, Jeremiah 1:5, Psalms 139:13-14, the Commandment against murder, and many more on abortion.
Yet in an attempt to back his point, Talarico twists the interaction between Mary and the angel Gabriel at the Annunciation, saying that the question of Mary’s consent to God’s Will is evidence of God’s support of abortion. “To me, that is an affirmation in one of our most central stories that creation has to be done with consent,” Talarico claims. “You cannot force someone to create.”
One key word in his statement betrays him: create.
In case Talarico isn’t aware, let me clear this up: Children are created in sex. Abortion does not stop a child from being created. Abortions are committed after sex, after conception, after the creating part has already taken place. Jesus was conceived virginally, so Mary’s consent in this case is a stand-in for sexual consent (don’t get confused, God did not have sex with Mary), NOT a stand-in for the “choice” to kill her child after her child had been conceived.
But that didn’t stop him from sending a letter to then President Joe Biden in 2022 imploring Biden to issue an executive order to lease federal lands to abortion vendors (to avoid state abortion limits), ban states from restricting Chemical Abortion Pills, and provide state lawsuit immunity to abortion vendors by hiring them as federal employees.
Students for Life Action (SFLAction), in a letter to Congress, warned against allowing abortion on taxpayer-funded federal lands, including in pro-life states against those states’ laws. Biden’s administration instituted abortions on taxpayer-funded federal land, including in pro-life states, via a Department of Veterans’ Affairs policy. That policy has now been overturned, thanks in large part to the pressuring of SFLAction.
Children aren’t safe after birth, either, in Talarico’s world.
While debating a bill in the Texas House to restrict child sex change operations, a clear example of child abuse and medical malpractice (which influential medical groups are finally starting to admit to), Talarico shamed those trying to pass the bill for using the Bible “to justify hurting children.”
That’s right: according to Talarico, sterilizing and chopping off children’s healthy body parts ISN’T hurting them, but protecting them from permanent, dangerous, and unnecessary procedures is.
To add insult (and blasphemy) to injury, Talarico can’t even stay consistent in his own transgender ideology with his claim that “God is nonbinary.”
Jesus’ pronouns (an unfortunate dialogue nowadays, given what we all learned in first grade grammar class) are decidedly he/him, a.k.a., decidedly MALE. His Mother, Mary, was told the child she would conceive would be a SON, the Son of God the FATHER. Nonbinary, my foot.
To use Talarico’s vocabulary: Respect Jesus’ pronouns.
But all this isn’t enough for Talarico, who is clearly joining the ranks of Democrats now turning their outspoken hatred of practicing Christians and Christian beliefs into claims they are the true Christians.
“These Christians in Congress, these Christian nationalists, they want a Christian nation unless it means providing health care to the sick, unless it means funding food assistance for the hungry or raising the minimum wage for the poor,” Talarico claimed.
Yet, it’s his party that is hiking up and imposing new taxes on everyday life, ignoring fraud that takes money away from American families, and shooting down legislation like Students for Life Action’s “Pregnant Students’ Rights Act” designed to help pregnant and parenting students receive the aid they need to care for their families and finish their educations.
Twisting Scripture for one’s own worldly gain is done in the Bible, yes, but not by Jesus. So, to Talarico: God and His Word are clear. You don’t have the authority to change the teachings of the Almighty to get what you want.
And to his supporters: Hold fast to the true teachings of God and don’t fall for the trick that has been played on people for thousands of years.
