Obama Rallies for El-Sayed in Michigan as Pro-Life Generation Challenges His Abortion Agenda

Former President Barack Obama traveled to Detroit on October 24 to campaign for Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, drawing supporters ahead of Michigan’s November 3 election. But outside the rally, Students for Life Action (SFLAction) delivered a different message: The right to life must come before political promises, party loyalty, or campaign applause.

The demonstration was part of SFLAction’s nationwide “Democrats Love Late-Term Abortion” campaign, which challenges candidates over their abortion positions and encourages voters to consider the protection of preborn children when casting their ballots.

Pro-Life Message Meets Resistance Outside Obama Rally

Students for Life of America (SFLA) Regional Coordinator Josh Janda arrived outside the event around 3 PM and encountered a large crowd of El-Sayed supporters, many of whom had waited hours to attend.

Standing in a police-designated protest area, Janda displayed signs challenging El-Sayed’s abortion positions, including one reading “Abdul hearts late-term abortion.”

According to Janda, the signs immediately drew heckling from attendees who opposed their message. Some told him to learn the facts, while others dismissed his presence altogether, a typical reaction from vacuous scoffers.

But another sign criticizing taxpayer-funded abortion produced a different reaction. Several insolent attendees openly cheered, with some responding, “Yes, that is exactly what we want.”

Throughout the afternoon, Janda engaged rallygoers in conversations about abortion, human rights, and the government’s responsibility to protect vulnerable human life.

While some attendees ardently defended the murder of innocent preborn babies, Janda repeatedly returned the discussion to a fundamental issue: ensuring preborn lives have the same human rights as everyone else, and the most important right is defending the right to life.

For SFLAction, these exchanges demonstrated why direct voter engagement remains essential, particularly when candidates push pro-abortion policies that deny preborn children their fundamental right to life.

Why SFLAction Opposes El-Sayed’s Abortion Agenda

El-Sayed’s abortion positions have been central to SFLAction’s opposition to his candidacy. In his public statements about reproductive policy, El-Sayed has pledged to cosponsor the “Women’s Health Protection Act,” codify federal abortion protections associated with Roe v. Wade, oppose national limits on abortion, and repeal the Hyde Amendment, which generally restricts federal Medicaid funding for abortion.

He has also promised to defend Planned Parenthood funding and protect access to chemical abortion pills, such as mifepristone, which has flooded our waterways at volumes of over 50 tons each year, as confirmed by a recent peer-reviewed study, threatening the fertility and health of America’s women, men, children, and endangered species.

SFLAction opposes these commitments because the organization believes they would expand abortion access, weaken legal protections for preborn children, and force taxpayers to subsidize abortions.

El-Sayed frames these policies as protecting “reproductive freedom” and access to “health care.” SFLAction maintains that health care protects both mother and child and never serves to end an innocent life.

Building on Michigan’s Pro-Life Momentum

The October 24 demonstration was not SFLAction’s first confrontation with El-Sayed’s abortion agenda. On October 8, Janda led students outside the Rogers-El-Sayed Senate debate in Grand Rapids, where activists challenged the Democrat candidate’s abortion positions and engaged voters in discussions about the humanity of preborn children.

These demonstrations build on the organization’s recent Michigan outreach, including:

  • Church flyering in Grand Rapids to encourage pro-life voter engagement.
  • A screening of Unplanned and campus conversations about abortion.

No Matter Who Wins, Protecting Preborn Children Remains the Expectation

With Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed competing for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, SFLAction’s mission will continue after Election Day.

Regardless of who wins in Michigan, SFLAction intends to hold every elected official to the same expectation: defend the fundamental right to life, protect preborn children, and support policies that serve both mothers and their babies.

That expectation does not depend on political party, campaign promises, or electoral victories. Candidates who seek public office should be prepared to answer for their positions on abortion and their legislative records.

As Michigan voters prepare to head to the polls, the Pro-Life Generation will continue making its position clear: Protecting the most vulnerable members of the human family is not merely an election issue. It is an obligation that extends well beyond November 3.
