Days From Ohio’s Election, the Pro-Life Gen Shares Message that is Convincing Youth Vote to OPPOSE Issue 1

Guest post by SFLAction Campus Coordinator Ilyssa Freiburger

GUEST POST: Working as a Students for Life Action (SFLAction) Campus Coordinator at Cleveland State University, I have been yelled at, insulted, and patronized by pro-abortion students — but for every horrible comment, the mind-changing conversations make it all worth it. Here’s what my experience fighting against Ohio Issue 1 on campus has been:

After starting a Students for Life of America (SFLA) group on campus — called the Advocates for Life at Cleveland State University — my pro-life peers and I began opposing the passage of Issue 1 through educational tabling, door knocking, phone calling, and social media campaigns.

Tabling and talking with students has made a noticeable difference. Nearly every person I’ve had a conversation with has had no idea the ramifications of Issue 1. Most are largely uninformed on Issue 1 and simply believe it will protect women. However, through conversations at our SFLA table, that changes. When they learn and read for themselves that Issue 1 will allow abortion up until birth, many decide to vote otherwise.

Phone banking to encourage Ohioans to VOTE NO on Issue 1

As an example, one female student came up to my tabling event recently and started reading the literature I had just put out. She stayed for around five minutes before telling me we had changed her mind about Issue 1. She said, “I was planning on voting yes, but after reading that Issue 1 would allow for abortion through all nine months, I’m going to vote no.”

I also talked with two girls who both said they were “pro-choice” but believed in a 15-week limit (around four months). After informing them that Issue 1 would allow abortion through all nine months of pregnancy, they were shocked. One of the girls registered to vote, and both pledged to vote no.

It doesn’t stop with students, either. One professor I talked with was strongly for Issue 1 when we started our discussion. However, by the end of it, he said that he would research Issue 1 more and I had given him a lot to think about. You never know what fruit will be produced from pro-life seeds.

Door knocking

My group has found door knocking to be incredibly impactful, as well, and we’ve loved getting to meet different community members. One mother of six children that we spoke to had no idea that Issue 1 would remove parental rights. Another couple, who said they supported abortion, had no clue that it would be allowed through all nine months. An older woman we talked to was strongly against abortion while another young woman — like many Millennials and Gen Z — didn’t even know what the measure was in the first place.

Despite their differences, all of them pledged to vote no on Issue 1!

This work isn’t easy by any means, and as a full-time student athlete working a part-time job, the little free time I have goes towards fighting Issue 1. Yet the Pro-Life Generation is continuing to push through because we know that if we don’t defeat Issue 1, thousands of children and women will be left to suffer. With only days left until the election, we will do everything we can to stop Issue 1.

When it’s over, we’ll be able to say we gave it our all.
