“Defending life is a winning issue – but only if you commit to the cause” says Students for Life Action on Virginia Losses

“As we’ve seen in other Republican led states like Florida, defending life is a winning issue – but only if you commit to the cause. The 15-week ‘moderate’ milestone that keeps being pushed forward has no appeal to the core Conservative, Republican voter that was needed to turn out to win tonight. Offering a position that allows more than 9 out of 10 abortions to our voting base and expecting them to show up for the half measure is nonsense,” said Students for Life Action’s Kristan Hawkins.

WASHINGTON D.C. (11-07-2023) – Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins made the following statement following the projected Republican loss of the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates: “Tonight’s loss in Virginia will no doubt be analyzed in the days to come, but we are so proud of the hard work that our volunteers, students, and activists put in on the ground in Virginia, and they should likewise be proud of their efforts and accomplishments. We also want to congratulate several pro-life candidates for their hard won victories tonight:

  • John McGuire, Senate District 10
  • Bryce Reeves, Senate District 28
  • Jason Ballard, House District 42
  • Tim Griffin, House District 53
  • Tom Garrett, House District 56
  • David Owen, House District 57
  • Paul Milde, House District 64
  • Mark Earley Jr, House District 73

“As we’ve seen in other Republican led states, like Florida, defending life is a winning issue – but only if you commit to the cause. The 15-week ‘moderate’ milestone that keeps being pushed forward has no appeal to the core Conservative, Republican voter that was needed to turn out to win tonight. Offering a position that allows more than 9 out of 10 abortions to our voting base and expecting them to show up for the half measure is nonsense.

“Our own You Gov/Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement polling shows that heartbeat abortion limits and limits when a baby can feel pain poll basically the same. Sadly, the biggest loss tonight is that for innocent, human babies – Virginia’s laws when it comes to abortion, which right now rank as some of the most permissive in the nation, making it a vacation destination for ending life in the womb. Tonight’s result means that is unlikely to change – but our work continues. We will recruit, train, and empower the next generation of pro-life voters and activists because we are in a marathon, not a sprint.

“The pro-life movement that worked almost 50 years to undo the wrongs of Roe v. Wade will not be discouraged. Making a case for LIFE on the human rights issue of our day – abortion – will not be finished in a single election cycle.

Students for Life Action (SFLAction), a 501c4, along with its 501c3 sister organization, Students for Life of America (SFLA), make up the nation’s largest, pro-life youth organization, managing a political and policy operation engaging Americans of all ages but with a special emphasis on the largest segment of voters — the Youth Vote. Together they provide political, legal, educational, and community support for women and children, born and preborn. Headquartered in Fredericksburg, VA, SFLA serves more than 1,400 groups on middle, high school, college, medical, and law school campuses in all 50 states. SFLA and SFLAction have more conversations with this generation targeted by the abortion lobby than any other pro-life operation in the world, each week reaching more than 4 million across social media platforms and averaging 1.3 million video views. SFLA has also launched multiple initiatives to lead and serve the future of the pro-life movement including the Campaign for Abortion Free CitiesStanding With You, and the Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement. Over more than 17 years, President Kristan Hawkins has grown SFLAction/SFLA and the Pro-Life Generation into a nearly $20M organization, now preparing for an abortion-free America.
