Kansas Legislators Introduce Students for Life Action Inspired Legislation Restricting Nearly ALL Abortion

Kansas deserves better to be an abortion tourism hotspot and we urge lawmakers to act to protect the lives of preborn future voters of Kansas – not abdicate their responsibility by giving in to the whims of a pro-abortion judiciary,” said Chanel Prunier, Students for Life Action Vice President of Political Affairs. “The practice of abortion has no place in our society and every life from conception onward deserves protection and dignity.”

TOPEKA, KS (1-15-2024) – Last week, Students for Life Action (SFLAction) took a major step in its mission to abolish abortion in the state of Kansas. Thanks to the joint efforts of SFLAction student leader Cheyenne Vandeventer and State Legislators, HB 2492 was introduced and, if signed into law, would prohibit abortion except when necessary to save the life of the mother. HB 2492, and its companion bill SB 286 introduced last year, are based off the landmark civil enforcement Texas Heartbeat law (SB 8) that ceased abortions in Texas even before Roe was reversed. It’s designed to bypass current court rulings and activist judges to stop abortions in Kansas.

“In 2021, there were over 7,800 abortions, and a concerning number of those were viable babies,” said Prunier. “Kansas deserves better to be an abortion tourism hotspot and we urge lawmakers to act, and not simply give in to the whims of a pro-abortion judiciary. The practice of abortion has no place in our society and every life from conception onward deserves protection and dignity.”

It’s been a long-established scientific fact that human life begins at conception – HB 2492 simply ensures the law reflects scientific reality.

In addition to protecting preborn life and the life of the mother, HB 2492 is also modeled after successful enactments in other states, combining language from Unborn Child Protection Act in Arkansas, the Life At Conception Act in Oklahoma and SFLAction’s landmark Chemical Abortion Prevention law that passed in Wyoming.

Nearly 70% of abortions in Kansas were done using Chemical Abortion Pills,” said Prunier. “These pills are more than just lethal for preborn babies – they’re extremely dangerous for mothers as well. According to data from The National Library of Medicine, Chemical Abortion Pills result in 10x the death rate of surgical abortions. Just as recently as September of 2023, Chemical Abortion Pills were sold by a Planned Parenthood abortion vendor reportedly contributed to a young woman’s death in Nevada. This madness must stop.”

In March 2023 the Kansas Supreme Court heard oral arguments  on how the Republicans in the State Legislature could go to restrict abortion. This case is ongoing, however, the state’s high court  has asserted a right to abortion in the Kansas constitution.

HB 2492 is currently with the Committee on Health and Human Services awaiting a vote.

Students for Life Action (SFLAction), a 501c4, along with its 501c3 sister organization, Students for Life of America (SFLA), make up the nation’s largest, pro-life youth organization, managing a political and policy operation engaging Americans of all ages but with a special emphasis on the largest segment of voters — the Youth Vote. Together they provide political, legal, educational, and community support for women and children, born and preborn. Headquartered in Fredericksburg, VA, SFLA serves more than 1,400 groups on middle, high school, college, medical, and law school campuses in all 50 states. SFLA and SFLAction have more conversations with this generation targeted by the abortion lobby than any other pro-life operation in the world, each week reaching more than 4 million across social media platforms and averaging 1.3 million video views. SFLA has also launched multiple initiatives to lead and serve the future of the pro-life movement including the Campaign for Abortion Free CitiesStanding With You, and the Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement . Over more than 17 years, President Kristan Hawkins has grown SFLAction/SFLA and the Pro-Life Generation into a nearly $20M organization, now preparing for an abortion-free America.
