Wall Street Journal: Trump Says States Should Chart Their Own Paths on Abortion
“… Still, failing to commit to a national ban is unlikely to cost Trump seriously with the antiabortion movement, which already credits him with helping overturn Roe v. Wade.
Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, said she thought Democrats would have used whatever limit Trump chose to paint him as extreme. “He didn’t fall for the bait,” she said. “This still shows our work is cut out for us when it comes to educating him that abortion is a federal issue.”
New York Times: On Abortion, Trump Chose Politics Over Principles. Will It Matter?
“… Those who were less publicly critical did not face the same ire. Kristan Hawkins, the president of Students for Life, said Mr. Trump was “very clear affirming the family” in his statement. She was confident that if elected Mr. Trump would staff his administration with aides who would pursue efforts to further limit abortion rights and access across the country.
“I hope he sticks with this statement,” she said, “and then moves forward and starts naming pro-life appointments, naming his pro-life vice president pick, pledging that he is going to only appoint pro-life leaders to the Department of Justice, Health and Human Services, Department of Education, F.D.A., E.P.A., down the entire cabinet line.”
None of the critics said they planned on withholding their support for Mr. Trump in November, an indication that the former president may not pay a very high price for failing to adopt a more aggressive federal position.”
Associated Press (Widely reposted,): Trump declines to endorse a national abortion ban.
“Students for Life, the anti-abortion group, has been specifically critical of the continued legality of hormonal birth control pills.”
BBC (Reposted, Yahoo): Let individual states decide abortion rights, Trump says
“Kristan Hawkins, the head of the Students for Life of America, reaffirmed her support for the former president but added there was “some work to do to educate President Trump” on the issue.”
Catholic News Agency: Trump on abortion: ‘It’s up to the states to do the right thing’
“Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life Action, meanwhile, said that pro-lifers “clearly have some work to do to educate the Trump administration to come” on the abortion and IVF issues but still called Trump’s announcement a “step in the right direction.”
“To be clear, the pro-life movement is united that abortion is a federal issue, and we won’t stop working until every child, in every state, is protected in life by law and service. Your state lines should never mean the beginning or end of your human rights,” she noted.
“Unlike President Biden, President Trump begins his remarks on abortion celebrating ‘the ultimate joy in life’ — children and family. That kind of love and support for the bedrock of society, the family, will be a welcome change in the White House,” Hawkins said.”
Business Insider: Trump’s statement makes it clear he’s more worried about Democrats than anti-abortion conservatives
“Other groups also reiterated that they would work with Trump. “Trump made the right call – and this leaves room for better action to be taken down the road,” Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life, wrote on X. Hawkins applauded Trump for not backing a 15-week ban, which she has argued does not go far enough.”
NPR News (Widely reposted): Trump declines to back nationwide abortion ban, says it should be left to the states
“Reactions to Trump’s announcement from anti-abortion-rights groups have been mixed so far. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the organization Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, said in a statement, “We are deeply disappointed in President Trump’s position.” She added that in saying abortion is a state-level issue, Trump “cedes the national debate to the Democrats.”
Meanwhile, the group Students for Life of Action responded more positively, if tepidly. Group President Kristan Hawkins made it clear in a statement that the group supports Trump as an opponent of abortion rights.
But she added that she hopes that as president, Trump would move in a more restrictive direction: “We clearly have some work to do to educate the Trump Administration to come on the many ways that abortion has been made federal,” she said. She later added, “Your state lines should never mean the beginning or end of your human rights.”
World Magazine: Trump touts Roe v. Wade reversal, supports states’ abortion laws
“However, Students for Life Action saw Trump’s opinion as a step in the right direction. SFLA President Kristan Hawkins highlighted the mutual goal of supporting families and welcoming young children, saying Trump would begin restoring the family values stripped away by the Democratic Party. Hawkins added that the GOP and Trump would need more education on abortion and concerns for the IVF industry.”
Rolling Stone: Trump Made Abortion a Campaign Issue. He May Already Be Regretting It
“Kristan Hawkins, the president of Students for Life, had a similarly muted response. “We clearly have some work to do to educate President Trump in the many ways that abortion has been made federal. But with the mutual goals of supporting families and welcoming young children, I can work with this,” Hawkins said on X. That’s quite a change in tone for Hawkins and Students for Life, which previously blasted Trump for taking insufficiently pro-life positions.
Students for Life was especially critical of a national 16-week ban on abortion reportedly considered by Trump earlier this year, a policy the group said would allow “9 in 10 abortions” allowed under current law.”
Daily Signal: Trump Makes His Position Clear on Abortion: It Is Up to States

Daily Caller: Pro-Life Leaders Give Mixed Signals After Trump Fails To Endorse Federal Abortion Ban
“Kristin Hawkins, president of Students for Life America, however, wrote on X that while the former president needed to be educated on a federal response to abortion there is room to “work with” Trump on the issue.”
“Students for Life America President Kristan Hawkins said anti-abortion groups “clearly have some work to do to educate President Trump,” but she “can work with” his statement, encouraging supporters to back Trump’s reelection.”
Townhall: How Close Is Trump’s Abortion Position to What Americans Think?
“On that note, it’s worth pointing out how Students for Life’s Kristan Hawkins posted throughout Monday several threads about her thoughts on the matter. Including the group’s demands for Trump, how extreme Democrats are on the issue, and more details on polling.”
MSN: Abortion opponents still expect federal action from Trump. Here’s what it could look like. : “Kristan Hawkins, the president of Students for Life, shared a long thread of action items on social media: Appoint supportive people to the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services, among others. Reverse a long list of Biden-era policies. Direct the Education Department to end distribution of abortion pills on college campuses. “The Trump statement from today is done,” Hawkins wrote. “Now, it’s time for the Pro-Life & Conservative movement to list out what we can do, when we win in November, to protect babies and mothers from the predatory abortion industry.”

Here’s everything else he didn’t say. “I don’t think this stops groups from pushing that,” said Kristan Hawkins, president of anti-abortion group Students for Life Action. “Who’s to say? Maybe we will see a bill pass and that gets to his desk as president to sign.”
Breitbart: Pro-Life Organizations Have Mixed Reactions to Donald Trump’s Abortion Position

The Hill: Trump’s federal abortion dodge draws fire from both sides
“Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, said it makes political sense for Trump to avoid staking out a federal position. In a post on X, Hawkins said a 15- or 16-week ban is not good enough, and officially endorsing one would undermine the positions of states that have stricter policies. “Trump made the right call – and this leaves room for better action to be taken down the road,” Hawkins wrote.
