“The two proposed House Resolutions are an over-correction on Invitro Fertilization and completely disconnected from the facts of the Alabama Supreme Court case,” said Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins. “The troubles of this industry stem from their own conduct, which deserves oversight and discussion. In addition to commodifying women’s bodies, the industry practice of forced fertilization with the intent of creating disposable children concerns many. While we understand the passion people have for a family, we shouldn’t rush to embrace the conduct of the entire industry that is profiting off of despair and zero ethical regulations. Let’s take a minute to consider what best helps all involved.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (03-11-2024) – Students for Life Action (SFLAction) sent a score alert letter to Congress this week, calling on Members not to support H. Res. 1043 sponsored by Rep. Mace (R-SC-1), and H. Res. 1037 sponsored by Rep. Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR-5). SFLAction will score against these pieces of legislation, which emphasizes disapproval with protecting embryonic children and perpetrates misinformation about the state Alabama IVF supreme court ruling.
“These resolutions were introduced in response to the Alabama Supreme Court Case ruling regarding humans in the embryonic stage being treated as valuable to their parents and whose untimely death warranted the use of the “Wrongful Death of a Minor” Act,” said Hawkins. “The ruling absolutely does not restrict IVF, yet Rep. Mace, Rep. Chavez-DeRemer, and others are perpetuating misinformation alongside the pro-abortion left. The rush to offer blanket protections, without reflection, ignores the many troubling aspects of this profitable business model that can prey on vulnerable families.”
Despite the media firestorm around the Alabama decision, nothing in the Supreme Court ruling outlaws IVF. Instead, the IVF clinics can continue to operate but with further accountability to treat embryonic children as the human beings they are, not to be discarded or carelessly handled like waste. There are sadly numerous media stories highlighting issues with the IVF industry, which is also poorly regulated and faces little monitoring.

In 2022, the global IVF market was $22.9 billion, according to a research report published by Spherical Insights & Consulting, and is expected to be $39.12 billion by 2032.
Additionally, data from the National Institute for Health (NIH) shows that 80% of children created during IVF that are chosen for implantation fail to result in a live-born infant. With a high failure rate, a production volume is needed to create a successful implantation, resulting in effectively “disposable” children.
