Students for Life Action Applauds Three States for Starting the Innovative Work of Protecting the Environment from Chemical Abortion Pill Pollution in Our Water

“Creating accountability for pharmaceutical companies who have set up a business model of dumping the medical waste of Chemical Abortions into our drinking water represents a new approach to the LIFE issue. Just because the Biden Administration supports abortion pollution that doesn’t mean the states must allow it to continue,” said Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins. “Once in place, the proposed laws will allow states to act if harmful endocrine disrupters are detected in the water system. “

WASHINGTON D.C. (02-22-2024) – Over the past several weeks Students for Life Action (SFLAction) has worked to successfully introduce bills in Oklahoma, West Virginia and Wyoming, to combat the spread of Chemical Abortion Pill pollution in our drinking water. The goal is to hold pharmaceutical companies responsible for the damage their products cause to the water supply and to ensure that chemically tainted blood, placenta tissue and human remains are disposed of responsibly and humanely.

“The abortion industry tells us that Chemical Abortion Pills cause more than half of the abortions taking place in America today,” said Hawkins. “Not only are they lethal to preborn babies and dangerous to mothers, but they may also be damaging to our environment and water supply. Despite this, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not conducted a single environmental study regarding the potential negative impacts of mifepristone. These new wastewater bills will hold the drug maker to account and do the job that the FDA is unwilling to, while protecting mothers and babies too.”

To read more about the lack of environmental testing, including a failure to ensure that endangered species are not harmed by the medical waste of Chemical Abortions, click here to read SFLA’s four citizen petitions to the FDA.

Additionally, the current policy of the Biden Administration allows No Test, Online Distribution of Chemical Abortion Pills and this exposes women to injury, infertility, death, and abusers, as well as presents potential environmental pollution.

According to the National Institute of Health, “endocrine disruptors” that are common in Chemical Abortion Pills interfere with a body’s hormones and are linked with developmental, reproductive, brain, immune system functions as well as tainting our food supply and harming livestock. They pass into the water system when women flush the remains of their preborn babies into the toilet.   Wastewater facilities are NOT required to test for the presence of RU-486, misoprostol, hormones, or other chemical pollutants that may affect the health of people and animals. Additionally, treated wastewater flows into rivers and groundwater.

The bills that have been submitted are:

OKLAHOMA

Senate Bill 1809    Introduced by Senator Nathan Dahm, the legislation would:

  • Ensure both the life and health of both mothers and babies are protected.

  • Goes after healthcare providers who willingly break the law.

  • Require catch-kits and chemical waste bags be used in instances of chemical abortion.

  • Hold drug manufacturers responsible for the mitigation of any environmental impact of chemical abortion drugs.

Senate Bill 1969

Introduced by Senator Shane Jett, this legislation will:

  • Require the Department of Environmental Quality to enforce sample data collection and reporting.

  • Prevent corporations from selling fertilizer contaminated with sewage containing endocrine disrupting chemicals, due to the abortion of babies (via chemical abortion pills) who have been flushed into the wastewater system.

WEST VIRGINIA

Senate Bill 278The West Virginia Chemical Abortion Prohibition Act

Introduced by Senator Patricia Rucker, the legislation would:

  • Ensure both the life and health of both mothers and babies are protected.

  • Goes after healthcare providers who willingly break the law.

  • Require catch-kits and chemical waste bags be used in instances of chemical abortion.

  • Hold drug manufacturers responsible for the mitigation of any environmental impact of chemical abortion drugs.

“The damage that Chemical Abortion pills can do to the natural beauty of West Virginia is profound. The women of this state deserve better than dangerous at home abortions that put their lives at risk, kill their babies, and by extension harm our entire states water supply. It is my hope that this legislation will be a big towards remedying these wrongs.” — State Senator Patricia Rucker.

WYOMING

Senate Bill SF 108 – The Clean Water for All Life Act

The Clean Water for All Life Act was introduced in Wyoming by Senators Bo Biteman and Tim Salazar, which would’ve accomplished the same objectives as the West Virginia and Oklahoma bills. However, this law is now on hold until next year.

The act would:

  • Ensure both the life and health of both mothers and babies are protected.

  • Goes after healthcare providers who willingly break the law.

  • Require catch-kits and chemical waste bags be used in instances of chemical abortion.

  • Hold drug manufacturers responsible for the mitigation of any environmental impact of chemical abortion drugs.

“On the heels of Wyoming being the first state in the nation to pass Students for Life Action’s bill ending dangerous Chemical Abortions, I’m excited to partner with the Pro-life Generation again to cosponsor their legislation to hold Chemical Abortion pill companies accountable for the flow of endocrine-disrupting chemicals into our wastewater system.” — State Senator Tim Salazar
