“It’s clear that the Biden Administration has used the FACE Act as a tool for aggressive pro-abortion partisans to take cases of alleged crimes, federalize them, and add the full weight of the government’s support for abortion to the ire against individuals,” said SFLAction’s Kristan Hawkins, in a letter to Congress.
WASHINGTON D.C. (09-15-2023) – Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins called for Congressional support of Rep. Chip Roy’s FACE Act Repeal Act of 2023, as it is “a long overdue course correction needed to reign in a weaponized Department of Justice.”
In a letter to Congress, Hawkins wrote the following:
“It has become a tactic of those who want a weaponized justice system to pass laws and use their authority addressing not simply the conduct of people engaged in debate but attacking the reasons for their actions, and then sometimes seizing state and local cases, to federalize their prosecution. A tool for this kind of viewpoint discrimination is the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act.
“Students for Life Action (SFLAction), the nation’s largest, grassroots, youth-vote organizer, with more than 1,400 groups in all 50 states, relies on peaceful pro-life speech in public places as central to our expressions of love and support for preborn children and their mothers. To prevent an abuse of federal power used against peaceful pro-life free speech, SFLAction calls for repeal of the FACE Act.
“Peaceful speech IS important. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “We adopt the means of nonviolence because our end is a community at peace with itself.” Students for Life of America and Students for Life Action calls for peaceful pro-life engagement, teaches our students how to advocate for Life in accordance with the law, and condemns violence against individuals engaged in abortion as well as attacks on their property. But there are laws already in place to address such crimes.
“The crimes of murder, arson, theft, vandalism, and assault should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law because those actions must be condemned and addressed. But a crime is not “worse” because of the reasons for it, especially for the victims. It’s clear that the Biden Administration has used the FACE Act as a tool for aggressive pro-abortion partisans to take cases of alleged crimes, federalize them, and add the full weight of the government’s support for abortion to the ire against individuals.
“Consider the August 2020 arrest of two Students for Life of America students for trying to chalk “Black Preborn Lives Matter” in Washington D.C. after all the violence, arson, destruction of property, and mayhem of the “Black Lives Matter.” SFLA continues to fight in court against the city’s abuse of two peaceful people for their point of view, as certainly their actions did not warrant such treatment. Viewpoint discrimination must not taint prosecutions. To prevent such on-going issues with a weaponized justice system, SFLAction calls for repeal of the FACE Act.”
