Students for Life President Publishes New Op-Ed Warning the Dangers of Prejudice in Policies, as Juneteenth gives way to the First Anniversary of the Fall of Roe

“Conception-based prejudice once led to laws blocking the legal rights and opportunities of people born out of wedlock—now, not an issue at all. Does American society, having once rejected second-class citizenship based on conception by married or unmarried parents, really want to curtail the right to life of those conceived in tragic circumstances? Do we really want to regress,” said Kristan Hawkins, Students for Life President.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (06-23-2023) – Students for Life Action (SFLAction) and Students for Life of America (SFLA) President Kristan Hawkins published a new op-ed at Newsweek entitled, ‘A Year After Dobbs, Let’s Change How We Talk About Abortion.’

In the article, which ran in the days leading up to Juneteenth, Hawkins spoke about the journey ahead for the pro-life movement which shouldn’t include policies that place a value system based on conception. She wrote:

“Pro-abortion language and ideas—often laden with insults, distortions, and barely concealed prejudices—aim to intimidate pro-life champions into abandoning the courage of their convictions just as opportunities for significant pro-life protections have become possible for the first time in more than 50 years.

“No one expected all of society to be remade in that short time. We didn’t have a Black president the day after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. We haven’t solved all the issues of race, but the party of Lincoln cannot give up that good fight for equality.

“In the same way, the pro-life movement still has its work cut out for it, beginning with rejecting the false assumptions and prejudices that went unchallenged during Roe’s dictatorial reign.”

Hawkins’ powerful message to challenge pro-life leaders to protect ALL life in law comes days before the anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson decision that overturned Roe’s misguided ruling.

This week, Hawkins as well as thousands of students, supporters, and activists will be in Washington, D.C. at a multitude of events talking about abortion in a new way. Here’s where you can hear us:

Students for Life Action (SFLAction), a 501c4, along with its 501c3 sister organization, Students for Life of America (SFLA), make up the nation’s largest pro-life youth organization and a political and policy operation engaging people of all ages. Together they work to end abortion — the human rights issue of our day — and provide political, legal, and community support for women and their children, born and preborn. Headquartered in Fredericksburg, VA, SFLA has more than 1,300 groups on middle, high school, college, university, medical, and law school campuses in all 50 states. SFLA creates strategy, policy, and programming to connect those most targeted for abortion with people ready to help and builds a framework for political engagement on their behalf. SFLA and SFLAction have more conversations with those most targeted by the abortion industry than any other pro-life outreach in the world, reaching more than 2 million people across social media platforms each week and engaging in approximately 100,000 digital conversations per month. Over more than 16 years, President Kristan Hawkins has grown SFLAction/SFLA into an $18 million organization preparing for a Post-Roe America.
