Taking the Chemical Abortion Fight to the Doorstep of Walgreens

Shawna Weber, Upper Midwest Regional Coordinator

GUEST POST: A dreary, rained-out Tuesday didn’t stop Students for Life Action (SFLAction) staff and volunteers from showing up to rally alongside the Illinois Pro-Life Action League at the Walgreens Headquarters in Deerfield, Illonois. The focus of the day was to call for a reversal on the chains reckless decision to bring death by Chemical Abortion Pills into neighborhood across America.

CVS and Walgreens, the two largest pharmacy chains in the U.S., announced their decision to sell Chemical Abortion Pills nationwide, drawing a strong rebuke from the pro-life movement at large.

The crowd gathered in Deerfield were people from all backgrounds, concerned for women’s health, and distraught over the future of easy access to these destructive pills. Meanwhile, across the country, SFLAction, SFLA, and other pro-life and faith-based organizations rallied at the doorstep of United States Supreme Court as the FDA’s approval process was debated.

Sadly, the Biden Administration’s abuse of the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) helped to set up No Test, Online Distribution of Chemical Abortion Pills that’s led to their widespread use.

Just recently, a report from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute highlighted that more than six-in-ten abortions are now conducted using Chemical Abortion Pills.

Chemical Abortion Pills are widespread in their use across the country, causing widespread injury, infertility, death, and exploitation by abusers. They’re responsible for causing four times the complications as surgical abortion, according to data from the abortion industry’s own sources. A separate study from the National Institute of Health (NIH) notes that the risk of death associated with Chemical Abortion Pills is also ten times higher.

Delivering remarks in front of Walgreens Headquarters, SFLA Northern Regional Coordinator Tom Usle said, “these drugs and those human remains are being flushed into our water systems. And Chemical Abortion makes up most of the abortions we see in a year, and there were over a million abortions last year. Where is the EPA research on how this is affecting our water system? That drugs intending to kill innocent human beings are flushed in our water system – you’d think the environmentalists would say this very dangerous. You’d think that Walgreens and other pharmacy companies would at least say, ‘we don’t care about the preborn but at least we care about the environment.’ No – because ultimately, they are playing politics with women’s bodies.”

Despite the strong showing from The Pro-Life Generation, no counter protesters made their way out to offer any resistance. Holding Students for Life of America (SFLA) signs reading “Chemical Abortion Can Kill a mother and Her Child,” cars honked in support of the message, and Walgreens employees saw the messages as they drove in. We also hand delivered nearly 29,00 signatures on a petition demanding the drug be removed from store shelves.

Walgreens security was always nearby, and a police officer notified us of a noise complaint from the neighborhood across the street. We were able to engage with numerous curious neighborhood residents and young pro-life students who were new to the movement at large.

By the end of the day, we drove our message home: we all deserve better than Chemical Abortion, and hope that the staff at Walgreens now at least question the need to sell it.
