“The Pro-Life Movement Wants a New Deal with Donald Trump”: Kristan Hawkins Sits Down with the New York Times

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Students for Life of America (SFLA) and Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkins sat down with Jane Coaston host of Opinion’s podcast “The Argument.” During their discussion, Hawkins laid out the Pro-Life Generation’s proposed new deal with Former President Trump, the pros and cons of the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) platform, J.D. Vance’s past abortion comments, and hope for the future.

On a New Deal with Trump and the 14th Amendment in the RNC Platform

“We were pleased to see that the 14th Amendment was actually in the platform — that took some education,” Hawkins told Coaston. “There’s a lot of concern about the short nature of the platform — and there was also this concern of, well, did they read the 14th Amendment? Because saying it’s a state’s issue doesn’t actually legally jive with the 14th Amendment.”

Hawkins continued by reiterating their new deal proposal with Trump.

“We’ve released a letter to President Trump and the Trump campaign asking for a new deal with the pro-life movement…we need to know exactly how this new Trump administration will be working with us to advance a culture of life. Especially when you hear things coming from the president, like abortion isn’t a federal issue; it’s up to the states now, which is just categorically false.”

The Republican Party Becoming the Party of Life

Despite still waiting on a new deal, Hawkins states the importance and positive impact the 14th Amendment in the RNC platform at the end of the interview, and how exactly the Republican Party became the party of life.

“The Republican Party was not a pro-life party, especially in the 1970s,” explained Hawkins. “It really took President Reagan, and even then there were struggles internally within the establishment and the elite on this issue, and every single four years when there’s a platform meeting, there’s always a debate. There’s always been differing views…”

On J.D. Vance’s Pro-Life and Pro-Family Stances

Hawkins also explained her reaction to J.D. Vance’s Chemical Abortion Pill stance, telling Coaston:

“…what Senator Vance said on “Meet the Press” was wrong. The Supreme Court did not say chemical abortions are good to go. They said the case had not been handled correctly, and they didn’t feel that the plaintiffs were the ones that could bring the suit. We’ll be back at the Supreme Court on that issue.”

Hope for the Future of No Abortion

When asked if the RNC’s platform works towards the goal of abolishing abortion, Hawkins said succinctly:

“Yes, absolutely. The 14th Amendment is in there.

There’s still much to do in the pro-life movement as we approach a critical presidential election, and by the looks of it, Students for Life Action (SFLAction) is on the right track. Right after Hawkins’ interview, DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement:

“The anti-choice extremists working hand-in-hand with the Trump-Vance ticket know that the RNC platform ‘absolutely’ paves the way for Donald Trump and JD Vance to enact their dangerous Project 2025 agenda to ban abortion nationwide with or without Congress. Trump has already been clear that he sees a ‘vital role for the federal government’ in banning abortion after his handpicked justices ended Roe v. Wade, while Vance wants abortion ‘illegal nationally.’ If given the chance, this extreme ticket will further rip away freedoms from women across the country.”

Coming from abortion extremist politicians, we’ll take the compliment.
