The tragic death of Amber Nicole Thurman from the summer of 2022 has become major headline news since ProPublica published a lengthy story about her death this week. However, what’s not being discussed enough is the role that the Biden-Harris administration has played in her death.
First, let’s dive into the context. According to the story, “She’d taken abortion pills and encountered a rare complication; she had not expelled all of the fetal tissue from her body. She showed up at Piedmont Henry Hospital in need of a routine procedure to clear it from her uterus, called a dilation and curettage, or D&C. But just that summer, her state had made performing the procedure a felony, with few exceptions.”
For the record, D&Cs are not illegal in Georgia, unless they intentionally kill the child through abortion. Vice President Kamala Harris, not wasting a second to use the dead as a political prop, was fact checked on X (formerly Twitter) using data from the very publication that broke the story.
But facts weren’t going to get in the way of a media frenzy- not in an election year where the Democrats are banking everything on abortion.
“It Was Only a Matter of Time Before Abortion Bans Killed Someone,” declared the New York Times.
But the simple and tragic truth is if abortion or Chemical Abortion Pills had been restricted or at least a controlled substance, like they are in Louisianna, Thurman would likely still be alive today.
Abortion is what killed this woman and her twins. And the Biden-Harris Administration did their part to make it happen.
To understand why this happened, you need to start with the way the Biden-Harris Administration abused their power through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) during Covid-19. They set No Test, Online Distribution of Chemical Abortion Pills that resulted in women being exposed to injury, infertility, death, and abusers.
Widespread regulatory changes may make the pills easier to obtain, but the lack of safeguards are deadly. In this case, Thurman sadly paid the price.
According to reporting by NBC News, “One of the changes, in 2016, extended the window when mifepristone could be used to terminate pregnancies from seven weeks’ gestation to 10 weeks and reduced the number of in-person visits patients were required to make from three to one. Another, in 2019, approved a generic form of the drug, and another, in 2021, removed a requirement that mifepristone be dispensed only in clinics, medical offices and hospitals, thereby allowing it to be administered through telehealth and sent by mail.”
In fact, because of this, the pills are widespread to the point where now over 60% of all abortions in America happen with these drugs, according to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute.
But the risks this poses are extreme. Half of those experiencing that life-threatening condition will have no risk factors. The FDA also notes that such pills present a risk of death from internal bleeding caused by a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. The pills cause four times the complications as surgical abortion, with a risk of death that is ten times higher, according to a National Institute of Health Study.
The Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) had an excellent fact sheet regarding the risks and complications from Chemical Abortion Pills:
- Three to seven out of every hundred women who choose chemical abortion early in pregnancy will need follow-up care to finish the abortion, with as many as 7-10% needing follow-up care in the first trimester after 63 days of pregnancy and up to 39% requiring surgery if the regimen is accidentally taken in the second trimester.
- As many as 15% of women will experience hemorrhage, and 2% will have an infection. The risk of incomplete abortion and infection increases with increasing gestational age.
- Chemical abortion drugs are increasingly likely to send women to the emergency room (ER): in a study of the Medicaid population in states that fund abortion for low-income women, the rate of chemical abortion-related emergency room visits increased over 500% between 2002-2015.
- Chemical abortions are over 50% more likely than surgical abortions to result in an ER visit within 30 days, with one woman experiencing an abortion-related ER visit for every 20 chemical abortions.
All the high-minded talk about caring for women and wanting women to have “medical freedom” is marketing rhetoric: these pills are sold, not given away. There’s no charity or benevolence in the Chemical Abortion Pill business. Every move and decision are just a play to get more of these dangerous drugs into as a many woman as they can.
Sadly, more women like Thurman will die if the Democrats and the abortion industry succeed.
