“Tonight’s amazing victory over one of the so-called ‘Senate Sisters’ is the final nail in the coffin of South Carolina’s WEAK ON LIFE Republican coalition,” said Student for Life Action’s (SFLAction) Kristan Hawkins. “Sen. Shealy, like many others, has now paid the price we said they would when they voted against laws that would’ve saved preborn lives from the moment of conception. We now turn our attention to getting pro-life legislation moving in South Carolina again, having successfully removed the obstacles in our way.”

COLUMBIA, SC (06-25-2024) – The string of defeats of several New York Times-supported, pro-abortion Republicans in the South Carolina State Primary races culminated tonight in the defeated State Sen. Katrina Shealy by pro-life challenger Carlisle Kennedy.
SFLAction President Kristan Hawkins said, “When I think back to where this began and where it has gone since, I cannot help but think that State Sen. Shealy should’ve just voted to do what her constituents wanted. But in the end, the constituents did get the final say – which is why State Sen. Shealy is looking for a job, and Carlisle Kennedy will soon have hers. We’re so excited to work alongside this amazing pro-life coalition of leaders in the Palmetto State and look forward to what we can do next to defend Life in law and service.”
The defeat of these pro-abortion senators, Sens. Shealy, Sandy Senn, and Penry Gustafson, was a strategic campaign undertaken by SFLAction after the 2023 defeat of the Human Life Protection Act, where these three Republicans sided with the Democrats to filibuster and block this pro-life legislation.
Hawkins said, “If anyone doubts the impact of grassroots door-knocking campaigns or an effective digital push via text, Facebook ad, or flyer, they only need to look at the results from tonight and the primary races two weeks ago.”
In the primary race between State Sen. Sandy Senn and pro-life candidate Matt Leber, the margin of victory was only 31 votes, showcasing how critical these deployments are to securing pro-life legislators in State Houses.
The total SFLAction grassroots program in South Carolina included:
- 37,407 pieces of mail
- 129,241 text messages
- 51,371 phone calls
- 2,572 doors knocked
- 91,923 digital ad impressions
SFLAction’s commitment to shaping a pro-life vision for America is laid out in our GOP for Life Campaign, where we are calling on Republican leaders to maintain and defend pro-life laws and protections within the GOP platform.
