Students for Life Action: Nebraska Heartbeat Abortion Prevention Act Clears Cloture Hurdle, Life-saving Legislation on Track to Reach Governor Pillen’s Desk

“We know the majority of Nebraskans wanted to see life protected in law after Dobbs, and we’re glad to see this legislation passed by the Senate to improve the future of preborn Nebraskans,” said Dustin Curtis, SFLAction Vice President of Political Affairs & Operations. “We strongly urged legislators to reject pro-abortion attempts to derail the bill and rightly vote like a preborn child’s life depended on it.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (04-12-2023) – Students for Life Action (SFLAction) was pleased to see Nebraska’s  LB 626, the Heartbeat Act win its cloture vote, obtaining the necessary 33 votes to advance. This Heartbeat Abortion Prevention Act is a huge step forward for protecting life in law, and SFLAction engaged in a rigorous political battle to ensure pro-abortion forces didn’t derail tonight’s vote.

The Senate advanced the legislation after SFLAction participated in testifying, lobby days, and an aggressive political strategy including knocking on hundreds of doors to ensure leaders didn’t waiver when faced with pressure from the misleading and extreme abortion lobby.

“Our goal is to make abortion unthinkable and unattainable,” added Curtis. “Any step forward to end the violence of abortion is good, but our priority remains to work with unapologetic leaders who want to protect life in the strongest terms possible.”

SFLAction highlighted this sentiment to key leaders when delivering models of spines as a reminder to have a backbone as the abortion lobby pushes back against life-saving legislation and stops at nothing less than abortion on demand.

Notably, LB 626 aims to protect women and children while making sure penalties are not placed against women – a second victim of the abortion lobby. The Heartbeat Abortion Prevention Act recognizes a human with a beating heart, inside and outside of the womb, deserves to be protected as life is clearly evident.

Students for Life of America’s Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement found in a recent YouGov poll that legislation that would limit abortion after a baby’s heartbeat has been confirmed was backed by 38% of those surveyed who said they could support a candidate who held that position.

The milestones of a baby’s heartbeat or viability show strong support with 17% of Gen Z and Gen Y saying a heartbeat is when a baby’s life deserved legal protection.
